Haiku

The Google Summer of Code 2007 hasn’t even started and Haiku already has new code coming in from an eager developer. So far seven developers have been selected to fill the spots that were given to Haiku from Google for the SoC 2007. Hopefully, this will be the push Haiku needs to get to that elusive R1!

The End of the Second Era

So, if you haven’t spotted it on IsComputerOn or BeOS News, Bernd has officially closed of the Second era of BeOS commercialism (Be, Inc., and BeOS, being the obvious first) - Zeta is no more. Bernd’s post sounds like it was harder to write than my own closing at beunited, and I’m sad to see all his hard efforts seemingly all for not. Bernd is checking the legal ability to release some of the source code to the community, to help preserve the advances made there.

BeGroovy wishes Bernd, and all of the remaining developers of Zeta, best wishes and good luck on any future endeavours.

UPDATE: Well, as if to pop a couple of caps in the dying carcass… Access has publicly stated that they have no knowledge of any license by yellowTab to modify the source of BeOS or any for distribution of said OS, and that Bernd/yellowTab, despite cease and desist orders, has yet to provide proof of such license.  Adding to the heat, Magnussoft has announced the cease of distribution of Zeta 1.21.  Talk about the flame wars on OS News.

BeOS 5 PE Max Edition Version 4 Beta 1 is on the streets… you can see the development log here, as well as download it from here. I’m getting a whopping 4K/sec right now, so the word is out that it’s out. I’ve shot Vasper an email to ask to temporarily mirror it here at BeGroovy as well to help out with the bandwidth…

beunited apps to come to BeGroovy - Or Not…

BeUnited

After careful consideration and some email discussions with the OS Drawer folks, BeGroovy has decided to cease plans to create a developer SVN repository here.  There were a couple of main thoughts behind this decision.  First and foremost, OS Drawer is headed up by Andrea Bernardi, long time BeOS community member and head of IT Bug, so I have no fears that such a repository would cease to exist anytime in the future.  Second, OS Drawer has an existing server and architecture, we’d need to still build ours up.  And third, we have our work cut out for us here, since we plan on a couple of other new features, and want to rebuild the core site and forums to a new system.  It makes sense for us to support Andrea and OS Drawer, rather than duplicate any effort.  So, the beunited source code will find a new home, and it will be over at OS Drawer!  I’ll be working with them over the coming weeks to successfully export any and all code repositories not held anywhere else over to their “drawers” for safekeeping.

BeUnited

Many of you have heard the rumors… well, on the 4 year anniversary of this post, I decided that today was probably as good as any to announce our intentions of building a repository to hold the beunited source code from their CVS server.  We’ll also be glad to host other projects, new and old, active and forgotten.  We have already acquired the server space/bandwidth to do so… just a matter of me finding time to get SVN set up and running with the repositories imported.  beunited’s website will be archived on this same server as well, keeping it around for bookmarking’s sake.  Plus, I wanted to use the beunited category logo one last time.  :P
We have a couple of other ideas going on for new community features as well, as we rebuild everything once again.  Let us know (in the comments) if you’d like to see something in particular, or email me if you’d like to help (dj at begroovy).

Not sure if everyone else has already seen this, but I just noticed it, so thought I’d let everyone know, just in case - the video of Haiku’s GoogleTalk is now online.  So, sorry, nothing more to say - gotta go finish watching it.  ;)

Six years ago today… Icons, Haikus, and Quotes

Site News

Just looking through some of the old posts from a long time ago, and 6 years ago today, we assumed the features of the former BeDope website at the request of Mike Popovic. These features were the Icon Tarot, the Haiku Generator, and the Quotable JLG. BeGroovy is proud to have kept them running in the community for the past six years now… wow, time sure flies.

Anyways, we have been thinking about new features that we can add to BeGroovy lately, and I thought we could solicit your inputs. Give ‘em to us, be they needed (such as a new HCL section, or a software repository), or be they cheezy and/or just plain fun (you know, something like the above features :P ). Comment below on any suggestions, ideas or thoughts. :)

Thoughts on Vista and a Brave New World

OS Wars

Through my teaching part-time in the evenings career, I was given a copy of Vista to work on for use in the classroom environment. Luckily, I had purchased a Vaio laptop not too long ago, which is Vista and Aero ready… So I loaded it up to give it a run through. What do I think? Well for the short summary version… There is a unique opportunity here for another OS to come along in the next year or so that could take a sizable chunk out of MS’s marketshare. For the slightly longer version, read on

JLG Resurfaces To See Haiku At Google

Haiku

Just like all the Elvis sightings throughout the world, someone over at the Haiku GoogleTalks caught a glimpse (and a picture) of our former fearless leader. It seems as though the infamous nipples were hard over Haiku, and he even spoke a few words of support. The last time JLG was sited in this community was on Nov 2, 2004. There were even a couple of ex-Be Engineers that showed up, supposedly. I, for one, am waiting impatiently for the full length video to confirm these sightings. ;)
Head on over to Haiku’s site to read about it, and judge the reported sitings, yourself. :D

BeUnited

Daat over at IsComputerOn sent me some questions concerning beunited’s demise, and I of course answered them. Feel free to read up on it over there. Daat is also collecting any follow-on questions for me to answer “from the audience”, so don’t post comments here with questions - do it through the comment system there, or email Daat himself. ‘Nuff said on that.

Haiku

umccullough and Katisu have been hard at work putting together a fresh, new Team Haiku website and it is now up and running for your use. Head on over and check them out. Some quick notes: with the re-newing of TeamHaiku.com, TeamHaiku.org reports that they will be pointing you to TeamHaiku.com from now on and it appears that the TeamHaiku.com site is a little sluggish at the moment but I am sure that will me fixed soon as well. Have fun!

Haiku-OS.org does a little re-decorating

Haiku

The fantastic web development folks over at Haiku-OS.org have done a great job polishing up their website. Apparently this is the look they were working towards all along but were forced to put up the previous look in a hurry when their original webserver crashed. Hmm… re-decorating, that sounds like a good idea…

Haiku gets an in with Google?

Haiku

According to the latest news over at the Haiku-OS website, Bruno Albuquerque of OpenBFS fame has been working at Google for the past year and now has managed to get an audience with Google engineers to tout the goodness of Haiku. I am not sure where this will lead or what may come of this but if it brings in a couple of Google engineers to work on Haiku, even in their spare time because they like the project, that sounds great to us!

Better video for Haiku in VMWare

Haiku

Lots of folks use VMWare to run Haiku in a sandbox type environment to see what progress has been made and such. The problem with doing this is that the video capabilities are limited because you can only Haiku in VESA mode. Koki has an article over on Haiku-OS.org that talks about how this is changing. Eric Petit is working on a video driver for Haiku that will allow it to work in VMWare and let the user change screen resolutions with rebooting among other things. Great work Eric, please keep it up!

For those of you waiting to “reach out and touch someone” with Haiku, the wait is over.  Koki has posted a nice blurb here on the Haiku-OS.org website about how to get Haiku to connect through the network stack that was recently committed to the Haiku project.  Thanks go out to Axel for doing the hard work to get this done!

For those of you who have not paid attention to the rest of the community websites, WalterCon 2006 is a go in Orlando, FL. All of the details can be found here. Because of obligations on our end, none of the BeGroovy staff will be able to make it to this year’s WalterCon but we will be with you in spirit! If you do go and have some good pictures or stories to share, please let us know.
