Bits N

Wow. I post news yesterday, and when I check my email today, there are tons of news submissions. Keep this up, and I will post new news all the time. :) Anyway, we have a bunch of be sites making changes… Read On..

BeBits is back, after their recent move. I shudder to think what the shipping costs for the server were.

BeTips was updated recently, including a tip about generating a playlist from CDBurner. Meanwhile a reader pointed out a great tip about using SoundPlay as an internet telephone. SoundPlay does all sortsa crazy stuff these days. :)

Newbe.org has started updating with a vengance, and has several stories worth seeing. They could become a great resource, so check em out.

I gave been told that BeUnited got 3 updates the other day, which is unusual, and good. Unfortunately, i can’t seem to access them at the moment, so i have no idea what they were about.

Finally, BeOSCentral is back online, but without anything new content wise. Hopefully their downtime marked some reorganization, and they are back for good now. :)

That’s the rundown… what a night. :P

    BeUnited/leBuzz/NPC outage

Problems with Site5’s router (but only our machine, not BeGroovy’s, obviously)… should be back up shortly. :) More news to post after it’s up too. ;)

Tell us more about using SoundPlay as an Internet telephone… :)

    Re: SoundPlay

Actually it seems quite simple. Set up an outgoing live stream from your PC, and have the person on the other end set up their own stream. If you have a duplex sound card, you should be able to stream your outgoing audio while listening to the incoming audio of the person you’re connected to. Of course others could probably pick up either stream (especially if they’re port-scanning your address) but I’d imagine that would be a rare occurence.

Heck, you could set up groups to communicate like this. Can anyone say conference call?

    Re: SoundPlay

There should be a plugin to make this simpler, rather than having to hack it like this. Any takers?

    Re: BeUnited/leBuzz/NPC outage

They said that they reset a switch, which caused trouble with their routing tables, and totally screwed the machine we are on. :(

    Re: SoundPlay

I tried to get it going last night. Enable LiveEncode pluggin, and in the playlist window add the URL “input://”. From MediaPreferences set Audio In as “Mic”. Hit play on SoundPlay. Now you’re streaming everything from the microphone. For kicks, open CL-AMP and set it to receive incoming audio streams (enter your machines IP address:8000). Set buffer size to a minimum (CL-AMP doesn’t allow less than 10Kb). Speak into the microphone. 3-5 seconds latter, CL-AMP plays the stream. Spooky. Anyone think its worthwile designing a script which would automate all this?

Whats weird is that it wasnt a site5 wide phenomenon. Just one box that went down for part of the day. The BeGroovy server is on site5 as well… as are many other sites that stayed up. So it was probably a freak thing. Of course, BeGroovy is sponsored by Site5, and I endorse them at every opportunity (I love them) and thus i may be biased. :P

    Re: BeUnited/leBuzz/NPC outage

I’ll agree with that. This one outage does not outweigh the fact that their service and support (and features/price) are outstanding. Site5 rules for web hosting. I’ve been most impressed with the speed of response to any problem, even trivial ones, when they do happen.

And _contrary_ to that note :P , Site5 notified us recently that there will be a little downtime tomorrow (saturday) due to a facility move… so everyone hold on for that one. Shouldn’t be long, and after that, service should improve too. :)

(BeGroovy isn’t accepting my password, so I’ll have to post anonymously, I guess. This is coming from BrentNewhall.)

This has intriguing possibilities for things like live interviews. Or even live “radio dramas.”
