3ivX delta 3 to be released at CeBit - includes Encoder

Codec

The 3ivx site has posted notice that they will be releasing version “delta 3″ of their video codec at CeBit, and it will include an encoder. They have been maintaining all platforms (including BeOS) and hopefully the encoder will appear on Be at the same time as the others. If the encoder were to convert sorensen to 3ivx, i would be VERY happy. As is, 3ivx could end up being important, and its great that they are bringing us beos users along for the ride.

Good…

It is good that they have been keeping BeOS up along with the rest. I hope they at least keep us on par with the other OSes. Can’t wait to see an encoder as there hasn’t been much stuff to see in the 3ivx format yet.
Always excited about new codecs :)

I agree, it would be great to be able to convert the Sorenson codec to a useable form in BeOS (Curse Apple and their proprietary crap :P )

Oh no! More rumours.

I dont usually post rumours, but here goes:

1) BeBugs is showing a lot of activity, and it seems as if finishing touches are being applied. So far, we know that we can look forward to OpenGL, Media Kit and BONE
2) BeInc are attending CeBit, end of March.
3) Latest news from Lionhead have a release date for Black and White - at the end of this month. A BeOS simultanoues release was trumpeted not so long ago.
4) The 3ivX team claimed a couple of months ago that the BeOS codec was dependant on unreleased APIs. If the codec will see a BeOS release at CeBit, the unreleased API problem must disappear.
5) Adamation are beta testing Personal Studio 2 for Win9x, with a BeOS version in its shadow.
6) According to Yahoo Finance, BeInc will burn out their cash reserves in the next 4-5 months. Additional revenue is urgent.

Conclusion - I think that they’ll announce Dano/R6 or simply The Next Version of BeOS at CeBit. It is the biggest show in Europe.

NWN’s has the simultanoues release, B&W needs porting (see bwfund.begroovy.com

We can hope that someone will pick up the port, but 3K is not much :( ~30 people )

Only 3,000 dollar? Come on guys Amigans can work together and combine efforts and collect in the hudreds of thousands of dollars… Why can`t we?

When Phase5 bankrupted they took around 500,000 worth of prepaid PPC board orders into their grave with them. Either Amigans are MUCH richer than BeOS users or they are far more devoted to their machines/OS.

Not going to happen.

As fun as this would be, all it takes is a 5 minute conversation with a Be employee to see that BeOS ain’t happening.
Let me give the pesimistic POV for a minute here:

1) Be is working very hard to get new features into BeIA.
2) As they always have, most likely to announce more IA deals.
3) It was cancelled for BeOS.
4) Not really. Be is now giving out codec APIs under NDAs, it seems.
5) Adamation has had NO activity on the BeOS front…remember BeatWare?
6) All the more reason to get BeIA out the door and into my kitchen. 8)

If we ever do see an R6…don’t expect it will be in the next month.

Re: Not going to happen.

Exactly. I wish people would stop getting hung up on things like release numbers. Heck, I wish they’d stop getting hung up on releases. :)

There’s no reason why Be, Inc. can’t release BONE separate from OpenGL separate from the new Media Kit. True, typical OS upgrades get released in a major version. But we wouldn’t be using BeOS if we didn’t believe the rules need to be broken from time to time. ;)

I don’t worry about new versions. I worry about the OS being updated. BeBugs and job postings on Dice.com tell me BeOS will be updated. I could care less if they never give it another version number. Just as long as we see the OS updated every once in a while I’ll be happy. Right now it suits most of my needs. I’m just looking forward to more icing on the cake!

I agree about the devotion thing. Fact is, PCs run a multiplicity of OSs’ … an Amiga just runs one. Todays PC users are far more likely to be indifferent to hardware….its the OS that binds people to hardware nowadays….my 0.2 grobbs

Reply to rumour 4)

The BeOS 3ivx codec IS dependant on an unreleased API. However, BeOS have been more than happy to let us sign an NDA and get access to this API.

The only impediment to a BeOS release of the 3ivx encoder/decoder is the BeOS teams ability to work on the code, there is NO holdup on BeInc’s side.
