Be supports BeOS User Groups?

Be Inc

Be, Inc has recently sent an email to all BUG’s (Be User Groups) they had on record, in order to update their listing and make sure their website has all the relevant information. This move shows definate support of the BeOS community, and is also pretty darn cool of them. Read on for the letter, and what to do if you run (or want to run) a Be User Group.

The Email Said:

Hello BeOS User!

My name is Wendy Hall, and I work for Be Incorporated as a Web Content Developer. I have recently been asked to contact you as a leader of a BeOS User Group. I am writing to ask you if your User Group still exists, and if so, I would ask you to supply us with some information about it, such as:

1) How many people are in your Group?
2) How many of these people are users?
3) How many are developers?
4) Do you meet, and if so, how often?

Any other information you could provide (such as a User Group URL or other member contacts) would be greatly appreciated. We will be updating our records on all of the BeOS User Groups throughout the world to be sure that the latest information is available on our web site. Thank you in advance for taking a few moments to do this.

Kindest regards,

Wendy Hall
Web Content Developer
Be, Incorporated.

This is obviously a good thing. If you run a BUG and weren’t contacted by Wendy, email her! In order to protect Wendy from spambots, enter her email manually. Its wendy at be dot com.

In a related bit of news, if you are interested in creating a BUG, contact BGA from Bug-BR and he would be glad to help you get organized.

    UKBug?!?

We have almost the largest BUG at UKBug, and I did not receive an email. And yes, the last time I checked my BUG was listed on BeEurope’s web site. :(

    Re: UKBug?!?

The email was sent to 12 people, so I’m pretty sure lots of BUGs, for one reason or another, were left out. That’s why I encouraged Nutcase to post this email as a news piece, so every active BUGs would have the chance to get listed.

BTW, BUG-Br is pretty big. ;)

    More reliable horoscopes?

Let’s hope that the personal data collected by Wendy will be used to improve other sections of the
BUN (BeOS User Newsletter) instead of the pathethic horoscopes…

    Thiis is encouraging…

At least Be is making an effort to finally update a few things. This is definitely a step in the right direction. Now if only a user group would start in my area (too busy to attempt to start one on my own :-( ).

    Re: UKBug?!?

I believe I’m still listed for iBUG, but wasn’t contacted either… but then again, I don’t know if it can be considered an active BUG yet. :P DLazlo is working on that. :)

    Hey, ouch!

Anonymous’ Horoscope: Your gutless habit of posting anonymously to websites leaving insults for sensitive writer-types will bite you in the patootie when you are called out for your misbehavior in front of a hardy group of Be users and enthusiasts. The stars suggest remorse for your outburst and a sudden inclination to be kinder to the Internet community. Sending a box of chocolate and perhaps a dozen roses to the injured party wouldn’t hurt your karma, either.

    Don’t worry Wendy… I like the horoscopes. :)

The part i think needs improvement is the interesting links area… you almost always like to the second most interesting thing… The most interesting being BeGroovy of course. :)

Actually, I can recall a few times where I thought that my horoscope was aimed directly at me. Which was interesting, to say the least. :P

    well put Wendy, LOL!

(hey, hadn’t noticed that nutcase implemented
the moderation “comments” ala /., must be why some
additional moderators were wanted I guess)

    I never got an email

AFAIK Wendy Hall runs the new “BUN” Be Newsletter.
What happened to Victoria who used to be the BUG person?

I registered a small BUG a looong time ago and ever since the focus shift I just assumed it was all over. Thanks for sending those emails, Wendy. You didn’t get everyone, but it’s a nice gesture ;-)

As far as I can tell, Wendy’s Be Inc email is wendy[at]be[dot]com. You can reach the very small `Clear Lake BUG’ by emailing kart[at]hal-pc[dot]org.

    To answer Wendy’s questions:

    1) There are 10-15 people associated with Clear Lake BUG
    2) They are all users (duh).
    3) About two-thirds of them are developers.
    4) We’re just local Be people. We see each other online and at local gatherings. Clear Lake BUG doesn’t advertise its existence anymore, so there may be some new users in the area that don’t know about it.

In case Nicholas, Ted or Paul are reading this, where did you guys go? We’re down to 2 remaining Teds (me and the Ted next door) plus the loosely-associated HouFUG people, who seem to tolerate Be people at their meetings ;-)

    Re: More reliable horoscopes?

actually, moderation with comments has been around since we relaunched last november. The issue was that I couldn’t give anyone moderator priveledges until i created a user system…. and that took time. I didn’t want to sit around moderating all day by myself, so i let the system sit idle until i could add people. Anyway, The user system is now in place, and seeps to be settling in well, so I started adding moderators. Hopefully i can add even more. If interested, email me.

    Re: the mouse that went

I just thought there should be someone brave enough to reply to these comments other than Anonymous. I don’t know what the hell to say - but at least it’s in keeping with what I’m replying to.
By the way, I am not going to try to speculate Be’s next move based on one email, but I am glad Be has not forgotten about the BUG’s. They can be a tremendous resource for Be and this at the very least, shows that they have not forgotten that - for too long.

Could be… Oh well, I get touchy sometimes with anonymous people. The new posting system just works so smoothly, I fired off a response faster than ever before.

    Clear Lake

Yup, that’s the place. Depending on what direction you live from Clear Lake, the Houston MetroBUG may be closer, but I don’t think they have organized meetings anymore either.

Maybe Nutcase knows what PinheadX or HKon are up to these days?
