Well, after a few non-pc days of travelling, I just checked my email and found I had recieved several updates regarding different applications in different states of Beta.. including Jabber and Inferno. Read on for the details..
First off, Jabber for BeOS has entered the RC1 stage, and is looking *great*. I am part of the beta program for this Instant Messaging client, and it is rock solid. It is being developed by Rapture in Venice as an inexpensive commercial application, and it is worth paying for. It should be released in the next week or two for everyone. I will post a screenshot as soon as i get a bit more settled in on this pc (i.e. get a tolerable ftp client)
Ynop has announced that Inferno is going into Beta. Inferno is a ground-up, BeOS native, modular imaging application. They are taking beta applications and will choose testers at the end of the month. Among a long blurb of details regarding inferno, most pointing out how BeOS friendly/native it is, YNOP mentions the layer pallate, and it sounds impressive:
Bitmap, Text, Fractal, Effect and the Vector layer is under heavy development
In other words… It does normal bitmap/text/effect layers like photoshop, does vector layers (like the absolute newest photoshop) AND does fractal layers (which seems like overkill, but sounds cool)
Anyway, this app could rule the universe.
More news as i figure out how to work from a windows box at 800×680 256 colors dial-up. Unless i kill myself from the horror of it first.

He has one of those new-fangled “plasma” monitors with the graphics card set to “IMAX” mode.

For your background image you could have a lifesize picture of Calista Flockhart… tall and skinny.

Jabber
Anyone know if know if the BeOS jabber client can/will be able to access AIM group chats? IIRC, one of the touted advantages of Jabber is that it offers near-transparent communication with other IM services, and I have several friends who refuse to use anything but the AIM group chats (which BeAIM doesn’t have).

Re: 800×6800 256
Fixed this… i would have done it before, but i couldnt see the screen.. it was all just big pixellated symbols and pictures of calista flockhart.
Windows on this old pc (possible tv show?) is more like a cheesy sci-fi effect from 1972 than an actual GUI. Ick.

Re: Jabber
The transports (which handle AIM, ICQ, MSN, and Yahoo) are all server based, which means if they are working on the server, they work on the client. The AIM transport is currently the only one that was working on the main jabber server, because they are reworking the whole transport system to make it even more stable… but the AIM transport was flawless… in fact, i think my AIM using buddies thought i was in AIM.

You guys better buy inferno
Seriously. It is the best thing to happen since BeOS started. And I know some of you are holding back to see what happens with Be Inc. We are all pretty sure in Febuary they are going to drop the R6 bomb on the world. (Might be a good time for me to buy stock while it is so low) If I can just wait till Febuary. Anyway, Be just hired about 30 new people to develop various things. I think it is clear that Be is here to stay with all the new developers coming out with professional style Apps. Bias Peak, and Deck. I think Groovemaker will come back if Be shows it’s marketability (In other words, if you go out there and buy software!)
I find that a lot of PC users (especially the ones
“In the know” are using Pirated software. These are the people that keep small businesses like Be inc. from prospering. They want everything for free. And don’t just use GIMP when it comes out like a lamer. We all know a Be native app will work better.

I’ll be first in line to get Inferno! I’m dying to use this app! It could blow most of those other image programs right out of the water since it is BeOS native.
Gimp, forget it. Too many memories of Zed

Inferno must continue
I’d really like to see the work on Inferno continue past 2001 (and beyond). It seems there’ve been several prommissing image editting apps that have fallen by the wayside.
Inferno sounds very promissing but I think it must be continually developed to really succeed. And to be continually developed it must be continually supported.

If you want to be a betatester, please fill out the request-from at www.ynop.net/inferno/beta.html
If we pick you to be a betatester, yuo can have a working version by the end of this year.

Re: You guys better buy inferno
I will definitely buy a licence when it comes out.
I’m not a graphic designer by any strecth of the mind
(otherwise I would buy a Pixel32 licence too) but for the few
times I lack such a tool ( homepage design ..etc) I’ll get
the Rolls of BeOS software to do it
And supporting the fine Inferno team is worth it too.
PS: the screenshots posted Dec/8th look _great_, can’t wait for the public beta!

You should increase the price
This may not be a popular suggestion, but you are crazy if you offer Inferno for $45. Photoshop sells for $600. If you sell your product for $45, it will convey the message that Inferno is a toy application whose value is less than 10% than that of Photoshop.
Granted, you have to undercut Adobe substantially to generate some initial sales and interest, but $45-80 is way too low. I would suggest an initial price of around $180-200.

Re: You should increase the price
Until this is a true replacement for Photoshop and we have previous Photoshop users dropping it for Inferno, I don’t think this is a good idea. If you price it high it will be an ‘either/or’ proposition for most people, and if you need the full functionality of Photoshop you certainly aren’t going to buy Inferno.
I have to disagree with your idea. But you knew that was coming!

Re: You should increase the price
I think we need only look at poor sales of ePicture (although the program did have a lot of problems) to say that a high price would be a horrible idea. We’re not going to win any Photoshop converts with Inferno (yet
, so the aim should be providing a product that the majority of BeOS users can afford and will be willing to pay for. Since the majority at the moment seems to be hobbyists and college students, $50 or under is an excellent price point.

Re: You should increase the price
OK,
We could increase price. But since we have no prices set jet, this would be verry hard.
We will announce prices for Inferno Pro and Light soon. As we started Inferno to contribute a great app to BeOS, and not as a commercial project, prices will certainly stay low for a while.
Maybe prices will increase in the future, but it will mostly reflect on the Pro version.

Sorry, I guess it’s been my week to make bad suggestions
Yeah, a price of $200 would probably keep it from selling unless it really was a Photoshop-killer. I’d definitely pay $100, though.
It just seems like such a sad reality that BeOS programs (and BeOS itself) have to be priced so low to get any sales at all.

Of course, you fixed it to 800×680, which is probably also not what you wanted, although it’s much closer.

Where do I get jabber for Be?
Did I miss something? I can’t seem to find anywhere to get Jabber for BeOS. I just downloaded a jabber client for windows though and am really impressed with the technology!! I’m sick of needing Yahoo! Pager and AOL Instant Messenger to chat w/ my friends, and that doesn’t include my friends using MSN Messenger, which I refuse to install. Yeah, so could someone please post a link to where I can download Jabber for BeOS
