Just wanted to put out a little reminder about banners.beunited.org. It’s a free banners service for BeOS related sites hosted by beunited.org. If you have a BeOS related site, or a site that may be of interest to BeOS users, you can put a banner up at no cost. It is _asked_ that you put the banner service somewhere in your web pages (top, bottom, wherever), and you use BeOS friendly banners (no punching monkey javascript, for those of you that remember that incident ). They are screened, and non-BeOS accounts are removed from rotation. There are quite a few people displaying this banner service, but very little in the way of sites promoting themselves through the service. Webmasters - make use of it. Enjoy.

Course, BeGroovy doesn’t show them because we don’t have /any/ banners. We do have that DCI button up there, but that’s sorta like advertising ourselves. Or something.
Anyway, odds are good I won’t add the banner to BG, simply because the shape of the banner graphic is enough to freak me out these days. It’s a vague discomfort that we can happily avoid here.

Well, can’t say that I can blame you on this one… I don’t even think beunited.org has them on the site anymore. Sometimes it just doesn’t work for the sites, or the site owners.
But there’s nothing to say that you can’t put your site’s image/banner ad in there and still not show the banners on your site. That was never a rule, only “Recommended”.
But I’m trying to drum up use of it, or else I won’t transfer it to the new server and it will go away.

What about text ads, ala Kuro5hin or Google?
I’ve been considering a text ad system for some time, and I might allow any site to use it to advertise on TBJ.
Would you guys like to get in on that too?

Thanks for the offer Chris, but not really.
I dont want to “get in on” any advertising to be honest. I much prefer not having them. The mental tranquility is pretty valuable in this day and age.
What I would like to do is figure out a way to psychically project the message “send me money to help cover server costs” to people without having to resort to cheesy “donate” buttons and such. Clearly this is not as easy as one would guess. Thus I may just have to keep coughing it up each month. ;P
Course, it is a hell of a server.
btw - like the new look over at tbj.

I signed Bedoper up for the banner exchange service. I had too much white space anyway. So far so good, I average a 2% click ratio, but I also capture some ‘mindshare’, I’m sure. It’s a good ‘community’ idea, otherwise I wouldn’t mess with it. I’m not much for making money via the web. If I ever see my banner on a site, I’ll be psyched.
