Be Inc

An interesting note from Jason Christie for all you with supposedly defunct Be stock -

…my BeOS stock has quietly doubled in price recently. It’s at .23, right now. At any rate, it’s gone from $90 worth to $170. I thought it was off the market?

Sure, now that we’ve finally removed the ticker from this site! :P

I saw this as well. Hmm … wonder if something is going on in the lawsuit that we don’t know about …

It went up just before the MS settlement announcement with AOL. Before it was pretty steady at 0.11 to 0.13. By the way, it is still available for trading, just not on the NASDAQ. It trades as pinkies, under the symbol beosz.pk. If you like the rumor mill, you can follow the (occasional) discussion in the Yahoo messages section:

For the little Be shareholders out there :

I have 100 shares, is there any hope of it getting above $2.00 a share? That is all I need to turn a profit.

I have 1000 shares (bought 100 at $7, another 100 at $2 and 800 just before they closed their books at $0.11). So if the shares eventually are worth over $1, I break even. I think there is a pretty good chance that the shares will be worth more than $2 at some point. MS has so much cash that they don’t know what to do with it. Story on Yahoo news says they are contemplating $10 billion in either dividends or share buy-back which will still leave them with $36 billion in cash reserves. They have shown they are easily willing to pay $750 million (plus a lot of concessions) to settle stuff like the Netscape lawsuit with AOL. The number of shares outstanding for Be is 37 million, so in order to make $2 per share, they would have to settle for about $120 million (which includes lawyers fees etc.). This is pocket change for MS, and I think it is on the low side. The same lawyers (for Be) settled the Caldera lawsuit for around $250 million (rumor, the actual amount was not disclosed), which was I think a smaller sized lawsuit than the Be lawsuit, and it was a number of years ago.

Let me just say I am keeping my shares. :-)
