In what /has/ to be a joke, this link has appeared on openbeos.org. If that is their actual name, they RULE. The world is amazing. If not, it sure is a good joke.

As in “The Big Lebowski”?
I can’t halp myself, but when I hear (or read) the name “Walter” it always remembers me of the character in “The Big Lebowski”.
At least it’s not a bore, I’d say

“Who peed on your rug, dude?”
No, Walter, you’re not wrong, you’re just an asshole!
I love Big Lebowski. Easily the most underrated Coen film. Very quotable!

It’s a joke
It is a running joke on the OpenBeOS list, which was started by BGA.

You can’t eat just one…
“You want a toe? I can get you a toe, believe me. There are ways, Dude. You don’t wanna know about it, believe me.”
“Yeah, but Walter…”
“Hell, I can get you a toe by 3 o’clock this afternoon…with nail polish.”

Please to be explaining…
If someone can let the rest of us in on the name and what it means, please do.
What I want to know is, what does this name have to do with the BeOS? I’d prefer a name which says something about the OS’s speed/performance/elegance, or makes some reference to what it is or was.
Personally, I think “the GeekPort” would have been the best possible name; I wonder why they never chose that one. Trademark trouble, I suppose?

extra vote
OpenBeOS should do an extra voting round:
“Do you prefer ‘Walter’ over all the candidates in the previous round:
O Yes!!!!! ‘Walter’ is a way cooler name than all of the others!
O No, it is a childish way to name something.”
Hoping public pressure works,

P.S. Having a name like ‘Walter’, makes for a good FAQ and anecdote.

hmmm
don’t like it. reminds me of the old guy in the movie “the burbs” with bruce dern and tom hanks. old guy name is bad for an os that relies on it’s speed and efficiency.
hope it is a joke.
on a side note, i do like the logo. but not the name for an os. sorry…

So what you really want is not a name, but a one-word marketing press release.

It better be a joke…
Seriously, Walter wouldn’t be so great. It doesn’t say anything positive about the OS. We need to offer potential users something more “positive” and “exciting” and even vaguely descriptive of the OS. It also isn’t catchy, positive, neutral or marketable like “Linux” or, even better, “BeOS.”
Now, the logo that goes with Walter, is really cool, so my hat’s off to the artist. I just don’t like that name. Come on.. how could it beat “Firefly?” There’s even a very cool science fiction TV show called Firefly… It’s a good accidental association.
I’m just a sour grape, I guess. It would be ideal to just keep the damn name we have. OpenBeOS.

No, I just want a name that’s actually related to the thing being named in some way. Like most other software in the world.
This isn’t a huge request; nor is it a huge request that we pick a name with good prosody, either. “FireBox” and “Haiku” satisfy both of these requirements, for instance. So do other names on the ballot. Both allude to the OS we know and love, both suggest positive OS qualities (speed, elegance) and both roll off the tongue well.
“Walter” sounds like we asked some random person on the street to come up with a name for something without telling him what it is. It doesn’t make me think of speed or elegance—it makes me think of a sitcom character played by Tom Arnold. It makes me think of nasal spray and corduroy and piano accordion lessons.

After seeing the logo, I was reminded me of “Big Mouth Billy Bass” - a robotic fish that sings, etc. It was all the rage at my office for awhile. (We Okies entertain easily.) For those previously unexposed to said Bass:

You mean like ‘Sprite’, ‘Plan 9′, ‘Amoeba’, ‘Solaris’, ‘Adium’, or ‘Dano’?
And I’m sorry, but neither ‘Firebox’ nor ‘Haiku’ trigger any associations with ’speed’ or ‘elegance’ with me, nor do any of the other suggested names. And using BiCaps in ‘Firebox’ would just make it worse.

The name “Walter” makes sense in a way…
W(indows)ALTER(native)
I guess that’s all there is to it.

Re: Walter
I find the name much more original than *any* of the other proposals..
And the deeper meaning you got there is really nice!
Another connotation: W = Double U = Double YOU (be more, better, extend your possibilities)
BTW my father is called “Walter”

Great Lebowski lines
“Board it.”
“Over the line!”
“He’s a nihilist.” “Must be exhausting.”
“…without the necessary means to the necessary means…”
“so i’m a lebowski, you’re a lebowski…”
“you are obviously not a golfer.”
“it really tied the room together”
“You’re being very un-Dude.”
“and they peed on it” “Donny, please.”
“I don’t use the oven and I don’t FUCKING ROLL!”
“Your revolution is over! My condolences!”
“he looks like a fucking loser.” “yeah, well at least i’m housetrained.”
“tomorrow’s the 10th.” “far out.”
