Right. This isn’t really BeOS news, unless you are a BeOS web developer looking for a great, inexpensive web host AND a special BeGroovy discount. If so, read on. If not, just know that site5.com goes above and beyond to support BeGroovy and thus the community, and we are just trying to give a little back.

Since we started with Site5 last summer, they have helped us every step along the way in building BeGroovy… from installing a special app for us, to working with the developer of our forum software to resolve a showstopper bug, to helping move us over to our new (and incredibly stable and fast) dedicated server, they have been nothing but great.

Because of all their support, we want to support them in return. We placed a small text link for them at the top of our page, hoping to send a few customers their way. (This is actually more for our readers benifit than theirs… finding a good webhost isnt easy, and now that we have found one, we want to share :P )

Recently I was chatting with our site5 server admin, and he offered BeGroovy readers a special discount. Obviously discounts are good, so we jumped at it. If you enter the code “BEGROOVY-103” when you sign up for a plan, you get your setup fee waived and your full first month of hosting free, no matter which of their plans you choose!

I obviously really like site5, and would reccommend them to anyone. If you are looking for hosting, i urge you to head over there and have a look. They will answer any questions you have, or if you want to, feel free to email me. I dont mind talking about em either. Now on with the show!

    good so far…

I also use Site5 for hosting The BeOS Journal at http://www.beosjournal.com

So far so good. I have noticed SOME downtime since signing up, but not enough to bother me too much. I really like the site administration tools. The pricing structure is what really hooked me, because I can have four domain names (and 250 subdomains) with the Ultimate package, quite reasonable at $25/month.

    What about domain name registration?

Site 5 does not do domain name registration, right? Do you all know of any good deals on registration? I’d sure like to get a domain for permenant email/web addresses… but the cost makes me hesitate…

yeah. for a few of my domains. The one that i can think of using them for off the top of my head is feelinglikeatlas.com - a site which isnt close to finished, but has had no domain troubles.

    I gotcha beat Nutcase.
    dotster.com for 15$ a year.
I’ve had no problems at all for the last 8 months (that’s when I registered)

    Re: good so far…

I’ve also moved BeUnited (and NPC under that) there, and today, we had one issue - resolved within a 20 minute turn around time. :)

But I too had noticed a downtime… turns out, it was a server upgrade that didn’t go completely as planned. :P I forgive them. :)

Re: What about domain name registration?

www.alldns.com will register a domain name for you for only $12.75/year. Yes, there is a catch. I have a couple of domain names registered with them and I am having trouble modifying my information (I would like the to point to different name servers). I have tried to contact the company a number of times to modify the info but have had no luck. If you plan on using them, make sure you have all your ducks in a row (never need to change anything) and you should be good to go!

For reviews of Domain registries, try:

I’ve registered a couple of domains through gandi.net and they’ve been good, but they charge in Euros which may not suit US buyers.

I just signed up with Site5

    Allrighty, I’ve just signed up for a Site5 account… they’d better be kosher! ;-)
