What a week it has been! Probably the biggest week in BeOS news since the focus shift announcement - bigger than any of the Palm announcements.
Then, OpenBeOS had a couple of major breakthroughs in the proof of concept area - the replacement media kit was able to play sound files through SoundPlay and CL-Amp, and a prototype of the app server was drawing to the screen. Small as it may seem, these were HUGE items that proved much about OBOS.
As if this wasn’t enough, shortly after, a leak of an unreleased version of BeOS hit the net, and has been the talk of the town since - I guess that about proves those screenshots weren’t fakes.
And where have I been during all of this turmoil? Barraged with well over 1000 emails, many of which were directly to me, and you all know me, I answer as much as I can, as soon as I can. Between that and not having internet access but at work, work being more busy than usual, I lagged behind seriously. I am extremely sorry about that.
And in response to that, I am bringing back to the “news department” one of the original co-founders of BeGroovy - H-kon - to help me keep the news of BeGroovy fresh, especially since I go 3 days each week away from the internet completely. Many of you old-timers will remember that H-kon posted news on Comdex the first year BeGroovy was around, back in ‘98, and then he disappeared into the dark corners of our forums as a moderator since. Prying him out of his hiding place and back out into the light of the front page, I expect he’ll be warmly welcomed. ;P
BeGroovy will not go away, especially not quietly, into the night of BeOS’s demise as long as there is a possible dawn in the tomorrows with OpenBeOS and/or BlueOS.
Note: While I cannot and do not speak for the OpenBeOS team in any way, I would like everyone to understand that OpenBeOS does not condone, nor support, this unreleased version of BeOS - do not send questions or feature requests about it to members of the OpenBeOS team. The OpenBeOS team will only support and develop OBOS in it’s first release to the released version of BeOS R5, so don’t bother asking them to include features in any initial version of OBOS based off of an untested, unreleased, beta quality build.
I am not sure about BlueOS’ feelings on this matter, but I suspect that they are similar in attitude, but would be more capable of doing work similar to this leaked version sooner rather than later.
