BeGroovy server mostly back

Site News

OK. Some of you (probably a lot of you) noticed that we have been down for nearly a full week. This is the fateful tale of what happened this time, how it was fixed, and why it wont happen again any time soon (hopefully.)

Well, all the downtime before was due to a dying harddisk. We didnt pick up on it in time, and last wednesday, it actually did die. This was obviously not a good thing, and it was even worse considering that I was due to get in my car and go on a sort of “BeOS Road Trip” on Friday. Well, the trip is ongoing, and it is great (To those of you I met.. thanks for the hospitality! You know who you are!) Anyway, while I was away, Site5 put in hours of weekend work, and installed a completely new hard disk for us. They then remounted what they could of the old one, and salvaged almost everything. The only thing that was lost is our email config. This normally isnt an issue, as I can rebuild as I go. But our server also hosts BeMail.org. Needless to say, those people probably arent very happy.

For those of you who use bemail, and havent quit because of the downtime, It should be back for good now, and very stable. It may take some time for the new emails to kick in and get you back up to speed. But things should start flowing by tommorrow for sure.

Anyway, thats the sordid tale of the BeGroovy server. We arent going anywhere, if we can help it. :P

Oh yeah, in a nearly completely unrelated note, I have to give “mad props”(tm) to BeOSJournal for stepping up to bat and getting tons of news up to keep things flowing. And of course, their is BeFaqs who run a BeOS server, and thus dont have our kind of problems (they have all new kinds. :P )

Anyway, we are back, and should be ramping back up very quickly now. Thanks for bearing with us.

    Re: all right!

    Thursday? I thought it was yesterday, and you only had 24 hours to download it… and with all the news sites down, nobody heard about it unfortunately. :P

    Actually..

    bemail is just a front end for bigmailbox.com.. I simply built a form that submitted(read:action) to http://mail.bigmailbox.com/users/bemailorg/enter.cgi, with 3 form names, un & pw and a hidden type named JS. I’ve been using my bemail account this whole time.

    Its all in the name

    I was beginning to think the 5 in Site5 stood for the 5 days in a row that you’re down each time ;)
    (Obviously I’m joking.)
    I don’t know what I would do if I was to lose my hard drive on my home machine. I’m horrible when it comes to backing up stuff.

    There was also OSNews

    http://www.OSNews.com reported a bunch of BeOS news lately too…

    The BeGroovy BEOS stockticker is either broken or wildly over-optimistic. As I write this it says 0.220, but actually today BEOS was trading for 15 cents on optimism that a deal might bring home $0.20 for shareholders in a few months time.

    Also, the BeOSRadio link is nice, but ko_je_bio_taj_lom1 must be real long…

    Still, the news and forums here are back, and that’s a good thing for those who like to keep track of BeOS happenings.

    I saw the mistake after the post, sorry. I can’t spell very good to begin with. ether whay its pronouced the same. If someone read it to you, you wouldn’t notice. I’m not a fan of the stucture of words in the english language.

    some things to fix

    make I -> i
    is -> iz
    you -> u
    enough -> enuff
    etc……

    It’s called RAID - it’s been around a while and while there are newer and better ways, including a completely redundant server, it is a very cheap and effective way of preventing a simple failure, such as a hard drive dying, from downing your site for days on end.

    Re: Actually..

    Myself also. Of course you didn’t even have to build the form yourself, as without the “enter.cgi” you’ll get a generic login page from bigmailbox.com.

    Is benews.com dead?

    Did I miss the memo on this? Ever since the big sale, I can’t reach benews at home or work. What’s the deal?

    Re: Is benews.com dead?

    Nah, BeNews have a problem that they can’t figure out how to fix. It may or may not be a hardware stress problem.

    They’re proposing bringing back BeNews at some point without the forums, because they think the forums might be the cause (or at least they might trigger whatever it is which really causes the server to go down)

    I always figured BeGroovy would die after BeOS Central and leave only BeNews, but it seems to be going the other way.
