First Productive 3.0 Screenshots

Gobe Software

Just to catch up on some news before another week begins… BeNews noticed that Gobe has posted a screenshot of Productive 3.0 running under windows. Tom Hoke later posted his own screenshot of Productive 3.0 running under BeOS, apparently on PowerPC. Tom previously stated in our forums that Productive for Windows is based on a recreation of the BeOS API’s. We have to wonder how hard it would be for Gobe to allow most, if not all, BeOS apps to build on windows, if Productive already does using Be api’s. In either case, Tom sat down with us for an interview about 3.0 last november. You can read it to find out about what will be happening in 3.0.

Its good to see that Gobe is diversifying into a Productive Windows variant. If Gobe can acquire some portion of the wp market it can shore them up better to continue to be a player in the BeOs world. Considering the monstrous MS Word suite, Gobe Productive makes a lot of sense. Before anyone can say that developing a Windows version distracts Gobe from BeOs work, consider that they will be no Gobe BeOs software if the company folds. Again, its the same old story with BeOs, if sales can’t keep the developers afloat they will leave the platform and then there will be no professionally designed software.

One question for the Gobe team though, what about updates ? I have had Gobe 1.0 for some time, and it would be a great idea if I could download an update for it (for a reasonable price). Such an option could encourage more users for Gobe products.

From last November to today, a lot can happen… Like ditching the BeOS version for example. I am not saying that Gobe did not work on GP3 for BeOS, but it is a different story to develop it until one point in time, and another story to actually release a BeOS version at the very end.

I hope I am wrong and gobe releases it though. Soon.

    Go-Be it’s in there (Prego?)

Imagine there’s no microsoft…. it’s easy if you try…. no hell from DLL’s… above us only sky…. Imagine all the people living life in peace…. imagine no WINME….. no WinXP too…. imagine no more crashes…. living life this way…. you may say i’m a dreamer… but I’m not the only one…. I hope someday they will join us… and the world will Be as one…

Alphaseinor ripped this song off of John Lennon… who probably wrote this song while on acid… cocaine… amphetamines… reds… purples… greens…. and any other drug you can think of

I hope they distribute Gobe in stores, with the BeOS and Windows versions bundled together (maby even a free.be image on the CD!)

Re: Go-Be it’s in there (Prego?)

What John Lennon describes is just communism so you’d better think twice before saying something stupid.
You don’t need drugs to write a song about communism.

Re: Go-Be it’s in there (Prego?)

Um.. if his description is “just” communism, and it’s accurate, then it will take a lot more than knee jerk anti-communist retoric to make me discount communism.

Seriously, communism is an economic system which failed horribly when twisted to a full social system.

Admittedly, it doesn’t work because of the fact that not everyone agrees with it… which is a fatal flaw. But to discount lennon’s description simply because you associate it with communism is a joke.

That description is beautiful, even if the reality of communism is not.

    Re: BeOS version

ummm, they do have a beos screenshot (on PPC, no less), and they have stated that they created the windows version by recreating be api’s in windows. that seems to say (to me anyway) “hey, we have a beos version, too.”

    get Mac OS X

Whats the point? BeOS is dead. Its a rotting smelly corpse. It has no future. Apple has a future - I dumped BeOS and went with OS X. Was BeOS better? In some ways, but thats not the point. Mac OS X will be around in a year; Be and BeOS wont.

    Offtopic but…

The Windows GUI (especially those icons) for Productive 3.0 is ugly looking :p

Guess that’s another reason I need to buy the BeOS version.

While I don’t particularly agree with this blatant troll’s opinion I am also interested in Gobe’s OSX plans.

ie. Are there any at all? I’d have to assume that yes, there are some. It seems like a nice ripe market if you can get out there fast enough.

It’s a well known fact that the current communist culture is addicted to some form of drug… Caffeeeeeene…. mmmMMMMMMmmmmm….. Forbidden ‘Dew….. ARRRAAAAAA

    I thought it was a good idea… lost it’s tempo tho…

I didn’t write the song about communism… I wrote it about M$… Now I know what it feels like to be misunderstood… like that guy in that one movie that wrote a book because his brother died while he was drunk (and Driving???)…. you know…. that one?

I always thought John was writing about the extremist animal rights activists…. the ones who think humanity should end… and we should give it to the chimps…

I guess it’s in the eye of the Be-Holder 87)

    Re: get Mac OS X

dunno.. seems unlikely to me, my personal opinion (note to the trolls, MAcHeads and others: see, if you wrote that kind of disclaimer your pots wouldn’t look like baits :P ) is that after suffering on win32, they’re probably not anxious to learn one of the 3 or 4 competing APIs on OSX (Carbon, Cocoa ..etc) and bloat up Productive.

In other news, TheRegister reported recently that Adobe is pushing back its ‘port’ of Photoshop to OSX, putting it on the back burner until (quotting from memory) “OS Ten reaches the usable stage”.

Re: Go-Be it’s in there (Prego?)

I don’t want to get into a political discussion right now. But we haven’t actually seen true communism in reality yet. That is IMO mainly due to the dictator leadership and the misuse of that power.

I personally believe that anarchy is the most reasonable social/economical form. But communism is also reasonable if done right. The problem is that the communism that has been applied so far has been very poorly managed, and that has lead to a downfall. Now people see that as a proof of communism not working. Which IMO is a strange conclusion.

Communism may be good or bad, but I’d be surprised if it (as true communism) get’s any worse than the crazy capitalistic/facistic/socialistic mix you US people have to live in.

Oh well.. Now I might have started that discussion anyway :)

Sorry about my poor english. I haven’t slept for a while.

If you have looked at both screenshots (the Windows and BeOS versions) you’d notice the icons are the same on both platforms.

    The competition

You’ve gotta wonder how Gobe plans to make any money in the Windows market. In addition to MS, you’ve got MS Works, Corel WP Office & Lotus SmartSuite as commercial competitors (admittedly the latter two are much higher priced) and then you’ve got free stuff like StarOffice (version 6 is set to be released 3rd quarter), the OpenOffice variants, 602Pro Suite, and Abiword. There are other products like Ability Office and online suites such as ThinkFree Office. Additionally, most of these have very “mature” MS compatibility filters, at least compared to the ones in Gobe 2.
Of course all these products are at least an indication that there is a potential market for the product, unlike the BeOS market, which is practically nothing.

The things Gobe does have going for it are the unique “single file format” and the integration of all the components into one environment. (And of course the stability of being written for the BeOS API, although having a Win32 API wrapper could slow down performance, I would imagine.)

Still, Gobe is going to have a tough battle. They are going to need some exposure by the big PC magazines, including some good reviews, as well exposure from the big web sites- CNET, ZDNET, etc. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to get the marketing buzz started now, or at least very soon. I wonder how far away Gobe is from a Windows release.

I’ll definitely buy a Windows version but it would be great to bundle both versions on one CD, as someone else already mentioned.

    The Essence of Achievement:

The credit belongs to those people who are in the arena … who know the great enthusiasms, the great devotions to a worthy cause; who at best, know the triumph of high achievement; and who, at worst, fail while daring greatly … so that their place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat.

    - Teddy Roosevelt

I say to Tom Hoke - Bravo! I wish you fortune and success for a great product! My hats off to everyone involved on your end. I will work on mine to promote it in the education arena.

    Re: The competition

I dont think they have a chance in hell of replacing any of the offices… but if they can get it used on some home users systems, or something, they can do very well for themselves. The market is just SO much bigger in windows land, that they should be able to make enough to break even… They arent a huge company.

Honestly, if they can break even, and maybe make a bit of a profit, then it doesnt matter if they beat office or what not. It just means they can continue developing their ideal office suite… and without the pressure of not having enough money. :)

    Re: The competition

My point was that with BeOS, Gobe pretty much is it as far as office suites go. There was no competition. Gobe didn’t have to do much marketing at all. With Windows, the market is very crowded. Gobe is going to have to do some clever marketing and position their product in some way to make it stand out from the rest of the pack.
The comment someone made about going after the college student is an excellent idea. Some OEM deals would be great as well.
