A couple of items submitted over the past few days that I wanted to clear out…
Tentacula was watching the video clip of a french music group called Air, and the clip was “radio number one”. He noticed what appeared to be BeOS in the video clip where you see them using a computer to sample their sounds. If anyone can verify this, or better yet, grab a screenshot, let us know!
A couple people wrote in about this, and Scott Brawner submitted the link to this article on electic.com about former 3dfx employees forming a new company. Hopefully they keep the same attitude of openness towards BeOS as 3dfx did.
Technix also wrote in to alert everyone to the fact that Pavel Cisler has left the OpenTracker team and handed control over to Dianne Hackborn. Click on More to read his email.
And a final note, PayPal seems to work very well for the BeForever TipJar. Daniel’s recieved over $150 in tips thus far. BeForever notes that on the 16th of the month, David Reid, porter of many important apps such as Apache and Gimp/GTK, will get his chance again, this time with PayPal. You can PayPal me tips for Daniel until the 15th (Friday), after which, until the end of the month, it will be a second chance to tip David. Remember, even a dollar or two adds up!
Here is Pavel Cisler’s official email:
I’ve been the head maintainer for more than a year now, sadly for personal and other reasons it is time for me to give up the position and hand it over to Dianne Hackborn.
When I first started OpenTracker in March 2000, I never imagined it would be as successful as it ended up being. We continue getting great patches for small and large features, improvements and bug fixes, and Tracker probably progressed more than it could have had I worked on it full-time myself at Be. I’d like to thank everyone who was patient with the tight control I enforced as a maintainer and who helped make Tracker and Deskbar what they are today. Also, I’d like to encourage everyone to continue contributing. Dianne, I am sure, will continue to keep all patches correct, consistent and keep Tracker and Deskbar in a top shape.
I hope that a year from now Tracker will be cooler still.
Pavel

Thank you Pavel for the good work! I haven’t contributed to OT (yet?) but I must admit that the sources are about the ‘cleanest’ that I’ve ever seen in an OpenSource projects. I fully trust Dianne that she will continue your good work.

Thanks Pavel!
I’ve always loved Pavel’s work on Tracker, and OpenTracker has provided some great enhancements. First time I’ve encountered single window browsing without it being obnoxiously slow. OT really is a great UI design in general.
I’m hoping that he’ll still at least contribute to the project every now and then.

Tracker.NewFS
Hmmm… I wonder if maybe now we’ll see Tracker.NewFS integrated into the OT codebase? That’d be nice, methinks.

Re: Tracker.NewFS
For reference, NewFS didn’t get integrated for a number of reasons, and that won’t be changing because Pavel’s not the primary maintainer anymore.

What were the reasons?

Re: Tracker.NewFS
Var naming convention not consistent with the one used in OT and usage
of exceptions as a flow control mechanism rather than pure error
handling mean, if memory serves (just bits of pieces I’ve read here
and there, others probably know better).
You’ll be missed Pavel! Hopefully things change for the better at some
point and you’ll be back again..

Not BeOS - see the video here…
It’s not BeOS unless they managed to skin it. Here is a URL to watch the video (you need Quicktime to view it)…

Re: Tracker.NewFS
Well the ability to have your own language in Tracker and Deskbar is a high priority to everyone not living in an English-speaking country.
How would you like it if you had to use your second spoken language. It’s pretty cumbersome at times and very annoying.
The speed of NewFS would also be nice.

porter of… what?
“…David Reid, porter of many important apps such as Apache and Gimp/GTK…”
Alright, where the hell can I download Gimp for BeOS?
Or is that port as far away as Pixel32 is?
(Atleast Basilisk runs Photoshop 4.0 under BeOS now, albeit only in 256 colors and slow-motion compared to Basilisk under Windows…)

Re: porter of… what?
Gimp for BeOS is still a little way off. take a look at david site http://www.david-reid.com/.the teams working hard but there’s been nor progress for a while.
Better than the GIMP take a look at Inferno (it looks like its going to be a very good 2d imaging app)…here’s the url :http://www.sentronic.nl/inferno/

Well I’m probaly not a good example since I’m French and enjoying
my second language (never using localised version of apps) thoroughly.
I was referring the the naming conventions in the source though.. things
like the hungarian notation ..etc (though tahnks ghawd it’s not the one
used in Be sources obviously
