BeOS R6 Beta appears on BeBugs

Be Inc

This report on bebugs is set to version BeOS/Pro, but talks about R6. There is no reason to think this actually IS R6. First of all, the bug listed is very odd, in that it provides little to no detail, and is actually called “BeOS R6 beta bug
.” Secondly, it says “same happens on my friends computer” - which would imply either a strange beta group, or some serious NDA busting. Finally, there have been rumors circulating that the latest beta release of BONE, BeOS’s new networking stack, changes the version number of BeOS to read R6 in the about box. It could simply be confusion. With all that said, until Be comments on it within their bug system, there is no way to know for sure, so let the speculation begin. Odd’s are it’s a prank, but in either case, bet the headline made your day. ;)

In related news, There has been much discussion about Be’s new OpenGL graphics layer, which is poised to be incredibly powerful, if it is ever released. NGE has been “sitting on a port of Unreal Tournament” until OpenGL is released, as stated in our forums, and the fact that Neverwinter Nights will require it. Follow that up with Soundplay 4.6 due for release with an OpenGL plugin, and one has to wonder if OpenGL is due soon. The developer of soundplay, Marco Nelissen, works for Be, Inc. and it’s hard to imagine he would prepare to release an application requiring OpenGL if OpenGL itself wasn’t due at any moment. What are your thoughts?

Update: This story is getting long, but Tim Koh of BeOutback pointed out something interesting:

1 Mozilla/6.0 (compatible; NetPositive 6.0; BeOS R6; BONE)

This line has been appearing in web logs around the net. (hint: search for netpositive in that page). Basically, a version of Net+ identifying itself as 6.0 on R6 logged onto that page on April 21st. Hmm.Update 2: Just to point out, the R6 bug has been labeled “Inappropriate” and the comment is “Funny” - So Be says its a prank.

    soundplay and opengl

Before you get too carried away: I’m not “preparing to release an application that requires OpenGL”. There is one plugin that requires OpenGL, the rest will work without it. I wrote this visualization to experiment with OpenGL programming, and will include it in SoundPlay 4.6 in the hope that OpenGL will indeed be released soon so that people outside the beta testing group can enjoy it too. This release is not an indication that it will indeed happen soon. To compare: there is another plugin that requires at least a pentium-III 500. That is not an indication that everyone will magically get such a processor either.

The R6 bug report is (99% chance) a hoax. The guy just takes advantage of the community’s and BeOS situtation and plays with our feelings. Kill’im I say. :P
Yes, I have my reasons to believe that it is a hoax. Sorry, can’t say more, I am filled with NDAs up to the neck.

So easy to screw around with the Be community nowadays.People guilty of this should be shot…

On another note, I am curious about the OGL plugin for the new Soundplay myself. That’s a cruel thing to issue if us standard users can’t get OGL :(

…unless it comes with OGL? :)

I say it. I have it here, I’ve seen it running at Marco’s monitor the previous time I saw him etc. It needs hardware acceleration, it won’t run at all in software mode.

I was under the impression, that every single OpenGL app or Plug-In will be hw-accelerated once the drivers and libs arrive.

As for this signaling a soon to be released new OGL implementation, I don’t think so. I guess Marco wanted to play with that stuff after having it sit on his computer for months (I assume). It does make for some nice screenshots. Can’t wait to see it in motion though… :)

Gee, that one’s old. I remember two weeks ago, when on BeShare we were thinking of fake bug reports like “While loogging in as a different user while playing 2 DVD simultaneously, the 5.1 sound skips”.
Please don’t mess with the BBC, it is a very important thing for us developers.

Ha Ha. What about “If I pull the power cable out from the PC while burning a CD and printing a label, when I reboot the CD Burner works OK but the printer resumption task adds an extra line to the printed output”.

On a more serious matter, the bug report speaks of the print server restarting. Well, if you check a few previous bug reports, you’ll notice that the print server didn’t work with the last few betas. That leads me to believe that the submitted bug report is legit.

You don’t have to be genius to figure out that some betas broke the print_server. I am sure this bug report is a fake, let alone because Be won’t take people in their early beta program that don’t even know how to write proper bug reports.

You’re wrong; existing OpenGL apps use the old BGLView API (described in the BeBook, IIRC), not the new BDirectGLWindow API (described in the Be newsletter many moons ago).

So, code will need to be updated to get hardware accelaration.

    Re: [No Subject]

“Dano” is widely believed to be the codename for R6. It has been known as that since Genki (4.5) and before Maui (R5) - Thus the about box saying Dano basically ends up meaning R6 on the rumor circuit. Then again, the whole reason for the names is to avoid version numbers.. it could be 5.5, or whatever. But it is a sign of a new release.

    Re: [No Subject]

Heh. Be engineers will be at work today, it probably means that they’re working on something ;-)

Seriously, that “Dano” name is a remnant from much older times, when the VP who had decided that we’d use codenames hadn’t been fired yet. We wrote “Maui” in the “stable” source tree that became R5.0.x, and “Dano” in the development source tree.

As for version numbers, Be engineers increase version numbers after each release such that the stable source tree is the next 0.0.1 from the release, and the development source tree gets the next 0.1. Those are “engineering” version numbers, though, anb they have nothing to do with “marketing” version numbers. Genki and Maui were (logically) numbered 4.1 and 4.6 in the engineering department.

Don’t pay too much attention to those, they don’t really mean anything. And if you do, engineers will start playing jokes on you.

I’m not a naysayer and don’t want to discourage anyone, but you can edit your Net settings to read out other browser names (mainly to spoof yourself into sites that use browser checks like hotmail - search betips.net for more info on how to do this)

I get logs similar to that site and I edited my Net browser string to check some things as to how mp3.com was detecting certain information. I’m pretty sure it read out exactly what I entered into the browser string.

To be sure, I tried it again and DL’ed some of my own material. The stat log will tell us more (on Friday, see http://rawstats.mp3.com/063096/20010606.txt to see what it says.)

I’m not going to comment on your view of BeNews, but I would like to point out that we stated in the story that it was probably a prank. I posted it because I wanted to point out the flaws.

As far as OpenGL goes, it was founded speculation based on quite a few events and releases. It was our take on the OpenGL things that BeNews posted.

Finally, the browser sig is again factual. Not a rumor. You are left to make your own conclusions from it, and many have judged it to be fake. While i guessed the bug was fake, I don’t jump to the same conclusion for the browser sig so easily. But who knows. At least now people can talk about it and try to solve the issue.

I guess the point is that this isn’t a rumor mill. It IS begroovy. This story was a round up of various odd things around the community. Period. The rumors arise from there.

Also, I put my name behind my decision to post it. Why is your name not on your post?

    But when

    Marco,

Maybe you can’t say anything about the release plans for OpenGL (and BONE), but surely there is someone in the Be heirarchy who can. Can’t there be some sort of “open letter” that tells us wtf is going on with respect to BeOS? What possible business incentive could Be have at this point to keep OpenGL and BONE from BeOS users? By offering BeOS for free, Be has already written off BeOS entirely as a source of revenue. If Be is worried that sending out beta-quality software will give it a bad name, that is nothing compared to the image it is getting by ignoring us.

Anyway, thanks for writing such a great application, and also thanks for your layout library (although I’m still having a little trouble figuring out how to use it optimally).

    Swimming with the fishe’s

I am writing this because I felt it was my turn to speak out. I have been using BeOS since R4 and I have been a very concerned user for some time now. I formed CarpetBUG, Be User Group in Northwest GA, (if you would like to join email me) and I actually started a Be User web site titled “the Be slate” but it mever took off. The reason I have decided to talk is simply this…

Am I the only one that see Be running us, the users and fans, in circles? It seems like since R5 I have been reading about a company 1) who neglects to talk or infor its USERS about its FUTURE 2) that has been dying on us and 3) rumor mill city (Be news sites). Plus teh fact that I have lost way too much money as a stock holder and I am waiting to see what this stock (and company) is going to do in the next 6 months.

My point is this, for the last 6 months we have been swimming in circles. CONSTANT rumors of R^ sightenings, BONE fake releases, OpenGL..yes..no..err.,maybe? Come on users, take the shot and take a step back. We’re not looking good…we haven’t been looking good…we’re dying here. But all hope is still not loss because of Be’s continous process of shutting us out.

I love BeOS, I always have and alwaysd will. I am running R5 on my work computer (and WinME) and I am running R4.5 on a seperate box 24/7. I have always been a crazy looney of pushing BeOS and everything relating too it. BUT, why is it that Be CONTINUES to shut us out and leave us guessing for answers?

I am in support of pushing for a “Open letter” like several users have recommened or for the push to “let it all hang out” and allow Be to address everyone once and for all. It may not be what we want to hear, it could be what we want to hear, or infact it could be something outrageous. But the fact is that hearing it from BE would be much better then heaing it from fake names or reading about R6 on fake beta releases of rumors like everyone has been getting in the last couple of months, is what we need.

I just wanted to get it out. I love Be. But damnit…you guys don’t know what you’re doing. (OR you haven’t told us that you about to conquer the world) :)
