An open plea to Be from ZDnet

Well, from another mainstream publication comes an open plea to Be, Inc. to release BONE and “give it’s orphaned OS all the options it can.” I tend to agree. For god’s sake Be, do something. I have had people “in the know” basically tell me BeOS is dead, and had other people “in the know” tell me that there is some double-top-secret undercover reason I should be bullish about Be. Whatever. I don’t care what the next release is anymore… I just want there to be a next release. And hopefully more after that. Please Be. You created something great. Don’t let it just sputter out.

I think it’s time to boycott Be Inc.

Please, Sakoman: do you remember your open letter
    in August?

Until you don’t give to us paying users whay you
promised, all the developers in BeBits will make
their programs invisible and all the volunteers
in the forums and in the newsgroups will stop
    giving support to newbies.

Release to us a public beta!

Re: IT’ S TIME FOR A “BEYCOTT”

Let’s boycott first of all Gobe,
    Apacabar and Koch Media.

Be gave to us however a complete OS for free,
inclusive of the development tools and plenty
    of technical documentation on-line

    Re: I T ‘ S T I M E F O R A “B E Y C O T T

    NO WAY

Why should we boycott them? Be will not care if we Boycott anything Be-realted and it will only harm “third parties”. GOBE, Apcabar, Koch, and all the other devs….

    Boycott would be stupid.

    indefinite hang at site?

Has anyone actually been able to *get* to this
article on ZDNet? When I try, it goes into an
indefinite hang, never loading. Perhaps the
site has been slashdotted… er uh…
“begroovied” ? Or, just a screwed up site?

Re: IT’ S TIME FOR A

don’t boycott anyone… especially not the distributors who constantly stick their butts on the line to get BeOs into your hands, and more importantly, onto store shelves. Gobe is awesome, and none of this is their fault. They are just waiting as long as possible, and scrambling to find a way to keep afloat while be tries to figure out what the hell is going on.

    Re: indefinite hang at site?

If i could “groove” ZDNet by posting a link, then by god I wouldn’t have to work on anything but begroovy. :P

The site is VERY slow to load. VERY slow. But it does load eventually. I think their code is bad. Maybe they should hire me. :P

Completely agree. A boycott would be a bone-headed move,
    and quite counter-productive.

It’s not a so bad idea.

Many developers are clos… ehm, I hope,
only striking. What else can we consumers do?

Re: IT’ S TIME FOR A

Re Gobe. I just recently bought some stuff from
them (BeOS 5 Pro and Productive), and will be
going back for more (Corum III). Boycotting would
    be phenomenally inane.

Re: IT’ S TIME FOR A

By all reports, Gobe, Apacabar and Koch Media get as much information from Be (you know, the company they’re acting as distributors for) as we do. That is, absolutely nothing.

    Damn, lighten up.
It’s just an OS… not some holy cause for which you should be prepared to die.

Well the site is fast as hell on my end.

    Re: emm..

The most sense I’ve heard yet. Remember why you use this product in the first place. Is it because Be made it - NO. It is a good product with incredible features. Keep your eyes open and , most importantly, your minds open to new oses and ideas. More good things will come in the future (and maybe they wont come from Menlo either).

    Idiot

    You, sir, are a moron.

Tell me, just what good would a “BEYCOTT” do? Hello, it’s not like they’d be losing any revenue..

    Re: I T ‘ S T I M E F O R A

A boycott would pretty much kill off any chances remaining that BeOS has. It would be foolish. We’d only be hurting ourselves. Personally, I’m not into self flagellation or masochism :P

I keep my eyes open all the time now, but as of yet, haven’t seen a glimmer of a replacement for BeOS yet (at least for my end of things).

Re: Loaded in under 5 seconds for me :)

Was at school with a very high-speed connection.

Sounds like things got better later in the day, as
it appears you accessed it well after I did.

    Alternative.

Instead of boycotting, hop on over to Gobe and buy
a copy of the OS for a friend. :) Or, for yourself,
if you’ve been using only the free version of BE5
up til now. Show some support with your wallet!

    Boycotting Be products = bad.
    Buying Be products = good.

    Simple equation.

    Re: I T ‘ S T I M E F O R A

A boycott is the dumbest idea I’ve heard yet.

What… You’re not going to by a second copy of Pro or Productive? You’ll refuse to pay your Soundplay or Flash Player registration?

It isn’t like we have a lot to boycott.

Most likely, everyone that wanted Pro or Productive has already paid for it. All a boycott would do is hurt the small dev’s, and small companies who _go_out_of_their_way_ to contribute to BeOS.

    Re: I T ‘ S T I M E F O R A

Look, people from the whole universe have
been “boycotting” Be for the last ten
years, that’s why there are so ridiculously
few of us Beers in the first place, for JLG’s
    sake. (pun intended).

There are probably better things you can do
of your free time than post inane ideas like this.

    Re: emm..

I agree - BeOS followed many ideals of the Amiga, which I was using before, and brought them to the next level, on a fresh, modern foundation.
Now as alternatives we only have Linux or MacOS X - Windows suffers from many well-known deficiencies I won’t talk about here, and soon also from BigBrother-O-Mania (XP-Registration).

So it’s either Linux which is such a mess, both technical and user-wise, “featuring” as many different GUI-standards and APIs as the total Lines Of Code Linus ever wrote.
Maybe I should look into KDE, but I don’t know how KDE/QT compares to the elegant and brilliant API of BeOS, and it’s mostly GUI IIRC.

Or it’s MacOS-X, which I don’t really like because of Apple and it’s expensive hardware. Also, it’s not really mature yet.

So, if I don’t want to use an even more exotic OS than BeOS, I’ll stay with BeOS as long as I can.

It’s good that Be needs new investors - I hope those will realise the NEED for a desktop-OS like BeOS and get a new release out of the door *quickly*.

    Re: emm..

IMHO the KDE APIs compare favourably to Be’s APIs… KDE 2.x has an awful lot of features the BeOS development community has been pining for ever since the BeBox days.

Of course, I’m only part-way through “KDE 2.0 Programming” (published by SAMS and freely available on the ‘net… suckers! uh, I mean, Open Source Rules Because I’m A Cheap Bastard!).

Another big advantage is that “anyone” can get hardware OpenGL now. *shrug*
