Ok. So this is a complete rumor. There.. Disclaimer complete. A reader pointed out that the Be Rumor site, La Belette, posted some new screens of a supposed “R6″ of BeOS. They claim it is being developed for a french company called NaBox who is working on some sort of BeOS based device/pc/thing. I usually don’t post supposed screenshots, but elements of these shots seem realistic. A close analysis of the images shows weird artifacting around the edges of the windows and icons. At first I thought it was leftovers from a photoshop job… but then I remembered how BeOS’s JPG translator does that to my images all the time when i convert from TGA’s. So it could be legit. Who knows? Read on for mirrors of the images, and then Discuss below. :)

    Re: It’s fake

    I can’t read the site, cause its french and babelfish isn’t liking me. It looks like they are saying these are mockups they are asking for feedback on?

    In any case, I have seen other things similar to this floating around, so unless there is a big “fake” conspiracy thing going, then something is happening.

    Re: It’s fake

    Most of us know by now that there is a version of BeOS (within the walls of Be, and maybe elsewhere) that looks very similar to this (and other screenshots leaked here and there), with new window decor and other gadgets. Whether or not we’ll see it in a public BeOS release, however, is another question.

  4. Anonymous Says:

    The Funny Thing is that…

    I have seen the initial designs by Bruce Brown, the designer of the BeOS UI, and the look of the window decor in these images is closer to Bruce’s original designs than the ones you currently see. Maybe I can find that interview with Bruce and post it to BOSC….Hmmmm.

    Lets hope they’re not. The GUI looks really cool…clean, simple and very useable. If its fake then maybe someone can do a Betheme of it becuase it does look really good, and if it ain’t then there is hope, that R6 will easily look and also be more useuable than as OSX or Win2000. My 2 cents..

    Forgot to mention…

    I like the login method, very nice, the handy thing is a bit too large as it would be very unpractical due to its huge size. A smaller hand would look a little nicer and take up much less space.

    Oh, and regarding what I was saying regarding Mr. Brown’s initial design, he didn’t have such a bright yellow for the famous Be Tabs. His yellow was a bit less obtrusive(spelt?).

    Be does have its own version of the tracker, but I doubt that it has moved into such a drastic UI change. Otherwise, there would be a huge development team just for revamping the BeOS UI. If that were to have happened, Pavel would probably still be with Be happily working away his days making BeOS much more user friendly.

    Just an observation. :-)

    look at the time in the top right hand corner no one could have taken the three or four screenshots I have seen with those different things open in just one minute. that means it is a static background with things pasted on top of it. come on people take a closer look at these things before you post them.

    They ARE Fake

    The revised BeOS tab that is showing on these pictures was taken by a *possibly genuine* leaked screenshot. But the rest of the screens are ALL FAKE. Only the tab is genuine and the rest is Photoshop’s work. Be was working on a new version of app_server with this kind of tab two years ago, but work has been stopped since then, as they shifted to BeIA. This version of app_server only lives forgotten in a Perforce branch in a Be development server.

    Free newtabs

    Maybe they should allow that perforce branch to see the light of day for R6. It has a nice look to it, but I am guessing that you would lose the tab sliding ability by going to it.

    R6?

    Being impatient for R6 is like being impatient for a sequel novel from an author that just now happens to be in the intensive care unit at his local hospital.

    When they’ve been laying off employees, possibly ditching some lesser customers, and thinking first about survival, the last thing they’ll want to show their investors is that they’re wasting time on R6, something guaranteed not to garner them a profit of any substantive kind.

    My bet is that they’ll have to really show some BeIA milestone (and income) before they can think about giving anything to the BeOS community. (BONE/OpenGL public beta’s being a remotely possible exception.. maybe. I have my fingers crossed, anyway. :)

    Re: [No Subject]

    Not to mention a cube only has six sides.. And, really, this would be a cumbersome way of navigating workspaces. The idea is to be able to switch between quickly, not waste 20 seconds trying to find the right one.

  16. Utako Says:

    Depressing…

    I nearly wet my pants when I saw these shots. It’s so… nice looking. Really beautiful. But then again, I know they are fake and that Be would NEVER go and revamp the BeOS into this work of art after commiting to their stupid IAs. This is truly a BeOS I will dream about. It will never come true, and even though BeOS currently looks better than any OS I’ve seen (yeah, it beats OSX and XP) this is just… wow. It makes you think. If Be had put in work again into BeOS’s aesthetics then the stuff under the hood and the features would probably be fantastic as well. I could easily see a customizable UI and other great things going for the OS (including BONE and OGL)

    BeOS is a great looking OS, anyone can see that. But it’s UI is generally haphazard and lacks the sophistication seen in these fake screenshots. If we had an OS that combine the speed and functionality of BeOS with a sophisticated UI, I think more people would convert. For example, the Tracker pulldown menus are just squares with icons and names on it. Not very sophisticated. Anyone have any other examples they’d like to share? I do, and I’ll post them later.

    LaBelette News

    I just discovered this site by a link from “BeForever” yesterday. Having only a foggy memory of high school French I struggled with the Babelfish translation, which is somewhat readable, but I’m unsure what gets lost with Babelfish.

    I found these stories even more interesting:

    ===================
    BeOS 5.04
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~—
    Be came out very recently the patch 5.04. This one corrects many bugs, and brings to OS an acceleration of about 2 % approximately, according to Be Unfortunately, this patch did not
    remain very a long time on the servers of the company, a serious problem having been discovered at the last minute, incompatibility
    caused by the last version of OpenTracker. It is a pity really very, because many are those which await this update impatiently. But that
    shows at which point, even if Be still is very taken by BeIA, that the company therefore did not forget BeOS of it. The fact of withdrawing
    a patch which brings a new batch of errors is a first in the data-processing world, since Microsoft exists, and whose patchs as
    many make corrections than of errors. Once more showing the engagement of Be Inc, and its will well to make, do better than its competitors, and to have the only OS worthy of this name.
    ================================
    (Me) I noticed the latest version of OpenTracker on Bebits lists “Integrate changes from Be.” as one of the recent changes. Wonder what this was all about?
    ================================
    To make Conceal BeNews.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~—
    How to make conceal BeNews? A subject of concern growing within Be Inc, BeNews being really dangerous for the company since
    really very quite informed and really advances some on all the official press releases.
    Solutions at summer found, largest misfortunes of the community. And we deplore the loss of informatrice of quality. Peace with its heart.
    ================================
    (Me) What’s this about BeNews? Could BeNews be considered “dangerous”? ;-) Maybe this isn’t just another “downtime” for BeNews? Why does a “Rumor” site exist anyway? I think *LaBelette* is actually something of a menace for Be.

    Of course, it would be great if some real French speaker could jump in and explain what they’re getting at in these articles!

    It’s already obvious those screenshots are just a “design” and nothing else. I am totally mystified by how putting workspaces on a cube could really make workspaces easier to use - cooler to look at, of course. As someone else has already pointed out, there’s only six sides to a cube - and what method of mouse navigation could actually be easier than the panes that exist already (or function keys, or that “Workspace Switcher” app?). It would be a great toy though! Maybe it would impress Windows users with the wonderfulness of workspaces.

  18. Utako Says:

    What I really liked and really did not like about these pics.

    The one thing that really really got my juices flowing were the three arrows in the tracker. That was just so cool. The ability to have single window Tracker browsing AND having a button to move to the parent directory. Granted, there are so many ways of doing this already, but for an underground OS like Be’s, this kind of recognized feature makes BeOS so much more acceptable. What I didn’t like about the toolbars were that they tried to be too much like Windows 98. The directory entry, the movable grips. Unnecessary, and that’s why they aren’t in BeOS. If I want Windows features that I don’t need, I’ll use Windows. Until then, things like address bar and movable grips are just extra code that bloat up an OS into Windows proportions. Speaking of which, the “Handy” Menu and the extra little thingy in the lower right corner are too obtrusive. They are very large and actually take a portion of the DESKTOP for themselves! Wrong, wrong, wrong. These don’t allow of expandability, and if this were made into a real R6, I would like to see them left out. Another thing I do not like about this UI. The dock replacement of the Deskbar. The Deskbar is one of the truly unique BeOS improvements on the world of Operating Systems. Just kill it and make an OSX rip-off? No way!

    Aside from these things, the tabs and icons next to them look really nice, but take away from the unindustrial look I love BeOS for. In addition, they are too damn big. This design combined with the old tabs would make for one preemo title tab. Also the resize and close buttons should be changed to look less like the Mac UI, but be kept on the actual tab to save space. Also, that third icon (which I assume is the minimize icon) should be gotten rid of. I love double-clicking the tab too much, it’s one of my favorite features of the BeOS UI. It take 2 seconds to learn and 0 seconds to master. Otherwise, I love how NaBox has redone the color scheme of the Tracker, but they should thin out the boarders of windows and keep the resize box in the lower left where the hor. and vert. scrollbars meet. The pulldown menus, scrollbars, buttons, and generally all the standard elements kick ass.

    I hope a R6 does come out.. and that it’s a real release, with some new UI elements, not a spiffy new tune-up to R4 (ie. R4.5, 5).

    WorkSpaces… to facilitate navigation between different the workspace, a panel proposes thanks to a form 3D (here a cube) to move and move the windows in each one of them.
    In addition, one can see small * Dock * mixture of the Dock of MacOS X and Twitcher. The cursor is present to show that with its passage the icon grows and of the text appears.

    Perso… for always having under the hand that which one needs, it is enough to place it in the panel * Handy *. Here, one clicked on Perso to reach its Favourites then.
    The fake is not perfect, it misses some small tricks, but it is right to give a first outline…

    Connection this time, places at Internet… Finally not completely. One can see here the panel of Connection and Statistiques.
    Small invisible note. The bar of right-hand side indicates * Line off * to select, but to pass in (out) line, it is enough to a clic right: the left clic making apparaitre this panel.

    Tracker right a small new look for him
    Nothing extraordinary, simply a small demonstration of * design * of bar of tools, menus and others…

    One will not hide it: there is full with influence in all that, therefore is honest and passes to the thanks:
    Be Inc and its install of the EP with the images in the dialogue boxes
    the Mozilla project and the skin chromium for the inspiration of the mitres
    Microsoft and Whistler for the pallet of colors, héhé!
    BeOS for its framework (icons, and original preparing)
    the author of Fake launched on BeShare: from R5.5 or 6 to see on the Weasel
    APPLE and its MacOS X for its Dock (though, already in Twitcher…)

    What I Want From BeOS R6

    All I want is a full and complete API. I am a JAVA Programmer but would LOVE to make native Apps for BeOS. The only problem I have with going native is I can’t use my nice JAVA API. Be made an EXCELLENT start with their Kits but what I want to see from R6 is those Kits expanding and implementing features that JAVA has had around since the 1.1 days. I want to be able to manipulate 2D graphics like I do in the AWT but at Native BEOS speeds. This is my dream: JAVA API meets BeOS native API.

    I really like this idea… but it might make me disgruntled with Be’s current design ;-) . But if there are OTHER people who want to do this… go for it, it sounds interesting.

    There IS a reason the BeOS R5 design is so minimal, you know. That reason is in the rendering. If the graphics in the UI were vamped too much, then that is just the practice of needlessly using too many CPU cycles. BeOS isn’t some interactive graphics demo, you know. The interface needs to be kept to a minimum drawing level.

    Re: LaBelette News

    quit that, stop being mysterious! what’s the hidden meaning
    of this? is it to say that this news item was posted
    on purpose to poke fun at the community? why is everyone
    looking at me funny? and those men in white who come and get
    me.. awww the lighting hurts my brain.

    seriously though I dunno how you can read all those rants
    and keep up with everything (even modding up/down a few
    that are in need of it in the process) and keep your sanity,
    but keep it all up; I know of a couple apps that
    will be reviewed exclusively by BG when they finally
    go from on-paper stage to a compiled executable :-) ..
    Though whether they will not suck ™ and will ship before
    “the worst happens” remains to be seen but hey,
    what doesn’t kill Be,Inc only makes
    them stronger, right..?…

    Re: LaBelette News

    Be’s fighting for survival, they don’t have the resources to package up and release OpenGL at this time. (Not speaking for Be, I don’t really have a clue, I’m just assuming, since they laid off all the non-BeIA-essential people…)

    I mean, we can still hope, but we’ve been running on hope for over a year now.

    Howdy!

    You people are so funny! Yes it is a fake, of course, but what a fake!
    Can’t you just fantasize a bit? Don’t you want it to be real? A French guy spent time to do it, because he loves BeOS. Just respect his dreams, and chill out!
    Go BeGroovy, and let our favorite OS groove on for good!

    *step for Be???

    is there any thing like lite/darkstep for be? is there a way that you can use some thing like windowshades to completly alter the look of the windows in Be. i realy like the look and feel of these shots and i would love to see if there is an advanced way to skin be. but i’d want to see something that goes to the point of being able to pull some thing like this off:
    > edit look and feel of windows (not just colors like Windoshade for be, i’d like something more like windowshade for windoze)
    > allow for a dynamic background (html/perl/php…) is it posible to have poorman/robin hood serve a background??
    > have a modular system like *step (maby this is more of a OpenTracker issue but still cool.)

    i realy dont know much of how Opentracker or App_server is writen because of my lack of C/C wisdom, but does any one know if this is 1)posible 2)realistic.
    just a thought.

    Re: It’s fake

    yes that’s a fake.

    A bad news also .. i was to the Cebit (www.cebit.de).
    On the Be Inc. stand, i asked for BeOS 6. The agent answered me that they haven’t planned a future version of BeOS. He told me … perhaps in 2-3 years … The future of Be Inc. is BeIA …

    Thats funny :(

    there is a way: learn to program. ;-) …if every BeOS user were a genius programmer… we’d have M$ licked in a month!

    Re: What about these?

    To me the text looks strange in the large window.
    For example “hi-ma-n-n-ku”.
    Please correct me if I’m wrong. And It’s a technical text, so why is it written phonetically, like children textbook…

    R6 Screenshot Found

    For those dreamers who haven’t yet faced upto reality R6 is a dream that will never be realised. The days of BeOS as a commercially viable operating system have come to an end. What remnants remain after the MacOSX massacre will certainly be extinguished by Microsoft’s brilliant WindowsXP. BeOS6 dreamers do something constructive with your time. Use these R6 screenshots as the basis of a BeOS skin for WindowsXP.

    Re: R6 Screenshot Found

    Way to try and sound smart.
    Perhaps yoiu haven’t heard, but users WON’T be able to make their own themes for XP.

    Bzzzztt, try again.
