Ulitma Online for BeOS. Only not.

Linux peeps have been working on a SDL version of the Ultima Online engine.
Someone recently pointed out to me that if you have the SDL Development Files, Net Files, Mixer Files, Image Files, and the data from Ultima Online, then you can build from their cvs and make it work under BeOS. So if you are feeling a bit more adventurous than just compiling vision, you may want to have a go at this one. Oh yeah, I have been told it’s much more stable in a window than fullscreen. Good Luck. :) Update: Apparently the SDL net build is broken, and you need perl to copy data files. Like i said, not for the weak of heart. We are working on a binary build of the current snapshot. It will be posted here when complete. Update2: Ok.. grab it here, unzip to /boot/home, and use perl to extract the data files for it. Note: This is a completely untested build (we dont have the data files), so again, good luck.

SDL community is good for BeOS, no - good for everyone

Something I’d like to add is that at Origin UO’s graphics are being improved for their next release, and Richard Garriot is no longer working for Origin.

As with any game rewritten using SDL (like both parts of Ultima 7), the game is going to be different in miniscule ways because the game has to be rewritten from scratch. It is not an emulator or a port!

SDL development is fast and efficient and works across multiple platforms including BeOS, MacOS, Linux and Windows. Developers: check out SDL! www.libsdl.org

There are rumors in the SDL community that a Diablo I port is underway. This is good news if it is true because Diablo II is very similar in architecture, making a port of both games more feasible.

    UOP data files

Make sure the data files would be on /boot/home though… I hardcoded the executable, as I don’t have the data files to test it.
Also, I think that only the first Ultima version works, not the Third Dawn. I have to check my email and then give you exactly which with version works.

    Re: UOP data files

I tried using the data files from my “UO Second Age” CD, but it fails with the error: “Couldn’t open gumps.dat dying!”.
I guess only the very first release of UO works.

Ultima Online Renisance - mild success, it runs…

I extracted the zip to home, and just mounted my ultima online renisance cd and created symlinks to all files in client directory off the cd to the program directory. I got the ever familiar log in window. My account on UO has been expired for over a year. I tried logging in as guest just to see what happened and the program closed with the message:
    Couldn’t connect to host: localhost
Maybe someone with a working account could play with it? If it works I might create a new account. UO in BeOS would be grate.

    Re: UOP data files

This is what the original author emailed me:

“We’ve been testing UOP with ‘Ultima Online: Rennaisance’.
Third Dawn doesn’t work.. but I’m working on that.

ack, this puts me in an awkward possion…

well would do if I did not have this dam winmodem :)

To re-start playing UO, or not…

I stopped for two reasons, one I (temporaly) acuared a normal modem, and secondly it was a little too “hack & slash”, and IMHO the world was badly designed. (just a selection of big “kill zones”.

But it was quite good fun….

    UOX port… maybe

I attempted a UOX port to BeOS a while back. I only know that it starts the server in LISTEN mode (netstat told me that much), but I had no way of testing it to see if it really works (I only have one computer). I don’t have UO right now at all, so let me know if it works or not.

Well enough chatter… Go to http://www.geocities.com/jjacksonRIAB for more information.

Ultima Online rocks. I have been playing it for about a year now and have dreamed of the day I could play it on the BeOS.

Ultime Online Rocks I have been using it for about a year now, Would be nice to see the 2D client on the BeOS, doesn’t need any special 3D work.

Do the developers the BeOS version want UO?

Like I said below, I have it, but don’t play it, Alas I dont have any credit in my account, so if you want it your’ll have to start paying out 15UKP/month(aprx see web site for price), but i’ll save you the 20ish pounds for the CD in the first place :-(

If you do, send me an email to mlk on grex.org with your address I’ll post the CD, and transfure the account to you.

    Connecting To UOx3 Servers

Has anyone tried connecting to some of these “open source” servers, or UOx3 servers that dont require money? I can log in and see the shard listings but once I select a shard it crashes “action: 0″ error. Even if I created an account in windows and then tried logging in through BeOS, any suggestions ?
