If you don’t know what I’m talking about, just go look at the other BeOS/Haiku/Zeta sites out there. I’m not going to bother linking anything.
Yes, there’s controversy. Yes, there are some obvious issues between them. But it’s between them. Let it stay between them. yT has been doing very well in cleaning up their act with the community, and all in all, released a pretty good R1. And Marcus has been an invaluable asset to the community, not one of my machines hasn’t benefitted from something he’s developed. And, I’ve had my own spats with BOTH of them at one point in time in the distant BeOS past.
But this is their spat. Let them have it out, and we can all talk about it after the smoke clears. Right now, it’s all speculation, and that speculation is just fueling the community fires.
And speaking of speculation, Robert Wheeler sent this in over the weekend… seems that www.beos.com, owned by PalmSource (IP acquired in the takeover) has been renewed as recently as 18 Aug 2005. Likely, it’s just their legal department renewing domains without question of their actual need or use.
But still, let’s have a little fun and speculate on what _could_ be afoot there.
Our new “Fearless Leader” Michael Phipps (and you have to be pretty ‘fearless’ to take on what was considered impossible by a great many a few years ago to recreate BeOS from scratch - something that is coming along very nicely now) was asked by a few of us to comment on his thoughts of WalterCon 2005, and he has responded to us. Since Chris beat me to the punch in posting Michael’s response, I’m just going to link you there (vice posting it again), in case you hadn’t noticed it over on HaikuNews yet.
Wasn’t there this year, and I’m still bummed about that. But, Bryan upheld tradition (is it considered tradition if it’s only been done once before?), and took notes on the funnier quotes from WalterCon, out of context and all. Take a look at The Looney Bin for some. Now if he’d just post a synopsis or some sort of report on the conference.
BTW, I don’t have a category icon for WalterCon yet… but I’ve been itching to use the Looney Bin one for a while now - so all’s okay for now. (Or not - it doesn’t appear to be working, and I won’t be able to fix it until I get home later tonight - argh. :/ ).
Begasus (aka Luc Schrijvers) wrote in to let everyone know that BeBug is running a wallpaper contest. The winner will be rewarded with a full ZETA 1.0. You can get more info on the contest here. I look forward to seeing some fresh graphics work in the community - I need a new wallpaper on my new Zeta install!
In celebration for the upcoming 7 year birthday of BeGroovy… Okay, that’s a stretch…
To help me pay for server fees (it’s that time again)… there’s some CafePress items I’ve put up with a “BeGroovy” brand. To start out, I’ve used a modification of the first BeGroovy logo from back in 1998 (and still visible on BeBits ). Each item purchased will help me pay for the BeGroovy server fees, so if you feel the need to help out, get a Retro BeGroovy Messenger Bag or Yellow T-shirt. I’ll add more BeGroovy (and maybe other) branded stuff there if this proves to be helpful in paying for the cost of BeGroovy’s operations. Or, you can just help out by donating a few bucks to my PayPal account (email me for my PayPal email account).
I must thank all our visitors over the years for keep me motivated to keep the site up and running, and a special thanks to all those that have been around for most (or all) of those years. But now, I need a little more help to keep it going - it’s not that I don’t have the money too - but keeping a server running for 7 years can add up to quite a bit of cash, not a bit of which a certain significant other is appreciative of.
And it will be appreciated by all those that visit here (and at least one person that I live with ). Thanks.
Update: At Euan’s request, I put up mugs there as well. Here’s the official storefront. Yes, eventually, I’ll get a better logo for the actual storefront banner in there.
And, a big thanks to all for the email about keeping the site going. Just to clarify - this isn’t a “life-saving” measure. The site isn’t going away, this is just a request for a little assistance from those that can afford to help out some - 7 years does add up.
