General Coffee Company needs help in a Flash

Ok.. so it looks like our pals over at the general coffee company film productions who create the macromedia flash plugin for beos seem to be having trouble getting it updated. The problem seems to be that Macromedia won’t help them get it updated to support Flash 5 and later. Apparently they use Macromedia licensed code, and cant get updated player code to work with. In anycase, it would probably be a good idea to let macromedia know if you want it updated, etc. If anyone figures out the best way to do that, let me know and I will tack it on the end of this story. Just a thought. ;)

Update: A reader wrote in with this link to request features in macromedia flash. Could be good. There is also a link to a petition being started in the comments below.

BeOS Projects Update

Bits N

Ok.. so this is to be a roundup of all the crazy happenings in the various BeOS Replacement projects floating around. Here goes. YellowTab has updated their page to a new, steadily growing system talking about Zeta, their new upcoming release. Zeta looks like BeOS R6 and includes some new stuff and lots of bundled apps. I will reserve judgement until I have a chance to properly review it.

Meanwhile, BeUnited is reporting that Leonardo OS is “regrouping”.. whatever that means. BeUnited also hosted a “historic meeting of the Open Standards group” recently. Whether the “Historic” portion is indicitive of some incredible forsight or simply ok due to a technicality remains to be seen.

BlueEyedOS has apparently finished the first skeleton of their app_server, as you can see here. They claim it is “in cvs” but as they are a non-open project, you will just have to take their word for it.

Last, but not least, OpenBeOS has been busy, releasing print server beta updates, registrar milestone 2, a few newsletters, a pretty far along media kit, and a bunch of updates on the app_server, including a screenshot of it rendering a font for the first time (publically presumably).

Phew. Not a bad round up for the past few weeks. Now to go dig through the rest of the incoming news folder, and see what else I can slam up here today. :)

Update: Forgot to mention this.. on the somewhat sketchy side, BeOS 5 PE MAX Edition has been released. Here is a blurb:

BeOS 5 PE Max Edition is a distribution made using the free version of BeOS 5 (called Personal Edition) with a number of drivers, add-ons, and software. It includes the new development tools from the OpenBeOS team Web site, but you will also be able to select the old tools. It only contains freeware and shareware demos. All the code it contains is legal under the MIT, GPL, or LGPL licenses.
And yes its Athlon XP patched.

Dunno about the legality of the whole thing personally, but check out http://www.vasper.net for more information.
