An open plea to Be from ZDnet

Well, from another mainstream publication comes an open plea to Be, Inc. to release BONE and “give it’s orphaned OS all the options it can.” I tend to agree. For god’s sake Be, do something. I have had people “in the know” basically tell me BeOS is dead, and had other people “in the know” tell me that there is some double-top-secret undercover reason I should be bullish about Be. Whatever. I don’t care what the next release is anymore… I just want there to be a next release. And hopefully more after that. Please Be. You created something great. Don’t let it just sputter out.

Rio300 Drivers… Finally

Site News

Wow. Ok. So ages and ages ago, we ran a fund to develop drivers for the Rio300 under BeOS. That fund actually worked, and driver development happened. The drivers were very delayed when their developer left BeOS development. He agreed to finish the flash expansion support however. To date that hasn’t happened, though I trust he will do it eventually. (soon?) He has a problem with people not keeping deals. :P Well, I am sick of waiting, so I am going to release the drivers as is. They aren’t packaged nicely, but they should work. Here they are: First, get the actual drivers (http://news.begroovy.com/files/rio-1.0.7.zip) and install them. I don’t know if they install correctly as stated in their readme, so someone figure this out and post the how-to in the comments. Then you can grab the Rio Manager (http://news.begroovy.com/files/Rio Manager.zip) and use it to copy files. Again, these drivers are as-is, and hopefully will be continued to be developed. No guarantees though. I hope you find them useful. :)
BTW: The drivers were developed by a Mr. Christopher Plymire, also responsible for AbiWord on BeOS among other things. (There, that should get him moving… :)

Scot Hacker speaks the awful truth

In his most recent Be View column for Byte, Scot Hacker discusses Be’s recent changes, with a startling amount of candor. Now, many people will knee jerk about how this isn’t “what the community needs” or how “it’s counter-productive.” That said, I fall on the side of the fence that thinks a bit of frank honesty is exactly what the community needs right now. That said, I can’t help but make Scot into a bit of a liar later on today, as I plan on releasing as-is beta versions of the forever-in-development rio300 drivers. Sorry Scot. :P

The "Any" Key

Well, due to the semi-slowing community, the lack of optimism, and a general lack of enthusiasm, The “Any” Key has stopped publication. Rob sent over a letter for you all to read explaining his reasons, which you can see by clicking “Read More” below. All the previous strips will still be available in the archive. I want to thank Robert for all his hard work on the strip, and for all the laughs. Those strips were clearly a labor of love, and took a lot of time. It’s a shame to see them go. Read on for his letter…

So a friend of mine looking out for me, in light of my current situation, sent me this link for a BeOS job in San Diego from Dice.com.

Too bad I just purchased a house here in Denver and would loose out on a ton of cash if I relocated. Besides, I’m not all that of a programmer. Maybe one of you developers out there would be interested though. :)

Thought I’d add this quote from the job description too…. kinda “makes one say hmmmm”:

They are a subsidiary of one the world’s premier electronics companies. They are poised to be the leading provider of digital content, services and devices in the 21st Century. Must have BeOS experience.

BeScream wants developers that want to get cash

BeScream is looking for interested developers for a new system they are setting up on their site. It will allow users to donate cash to developers, likely through PayPal. This helps users show interest where it counts (the pocketbook) for freeware apps and drivers, as well as new projects underway - and even help us website maintainers with server costs ;) .

This system is not yet ready for donations, so don’t go there yet wanting to send me money. :P But if you are a developer interested in moving this forward, or getting a few pennies for your efforts, contact David of BeScream.
