Conspiracy Theories - Sony buying Be

Submitted News

This morning we had a reader submit a rather long explanation of an interesting theory. Basically, he believes Sony will use Be in an attack against Microsoft and Intel on the desktop. Probably by just buying Be outright. While we were preparing it for posting, and were checking his sources, he mentioned that he had also submitted it to the register. Sure enough, they posted it before us. That’s how it goes. In any case, read there, comment here. :)

BeDope Sells Out - Closes Down

BeDope

BeDope, that bastion of BeOS related humor, seems to be closing down after three years of good times. They are going out with a bang, after having acquired AOL Time Warner and creating “the new AOL Time Warner Be Dope organization” While that is probably questionable, it states it’s their final issue. And I’m gonna miss them. Thanks for the laughs guys. UPDATE: Mike has issued a letter to clarify any confusion over the BeDope closing. Read More to see it.

A member of our forums pointed out this url for a japanese web site with a USB Drive-Bay PulseBox. Needless to say, this is the coolest piece of hardware on the planet for true begeeks. Is there anyone out there who can translate this, has built it, or has a similar project going on?

Forums

Ok… this isnt forum news, but the icon is cool, so cope. I have heard that one of the news ticker style proggies are gonna be getting an update soon, and the developer wants to know what sites you would like it to cover. Basically any site with headlines: Be, tech, entertainment, sports, whatever. BeDope stuff is good too.. Now please don’t think that this means any time a dev needs some info i am gonna post a news item asking y’all… I am just very curious about this myself, seeing as I run a website with sidebar potential… ;)

Be Inc

JLG has just updated his column on Be’s webpage. He talks about how the shift is from COMDEX to CES and the appliances are taking focus. It’s very interesting to read and hear some of his thoughts, and to see how he puts a few various observations together for a bigger whole… Have a look-see.

Gobe Software

In what can only be described as a fit of generous free advertising, I am compelled to point out that Gobe Software is having a sale and offering Productive for $49.95 ($30 off!) or Productive and BeOS R5 Pro bundled for $54.95 (way too cheap… buy now before they come to their senses.) If you haven’t taken the step from PE to the Professional Edition, now is the time to do it….

Perilous Posting Pertaining the Pepper Port

Ok… everyone and their uncle’s roommate has submitted the fact that Peppers Port is in trouble.. apparently Martin Hekkelman got a job and doesn’t have time finish the mostly finished port of Pepper. So he is offering the position to someone else. Apparently there are a few issues, but they could be resolved within a few weeks. You can read more on his website, or email him. If any dev’s have some free time, this is pretty worthy, considering its close to release. Who knows, you may even get a cut of the action on sales. I think I will just stick to Eddie. hmm… Eddie vs. Pe == vi vs. emacs? :)

O Brother, Where Art Thou?

Film / Movie

Ruprect is back with a review of the Coen’s "O Brother, Where Art Thou?", a comedy set in 1920-30’s Mississippi. George Clooney plays a complete moron, accompanied by two even greater morons, on a quest that parallels that in Homer’s Odyssey, all set to one of the best soundtracks since American Beauty’s score. A previous Coen flick, The Big Lebowski is one of my favourites, so i am very anxious for this film to make it’s way to Tallahassee. In the meantime, let’s hear what Ruprect had to say…

Tascam just announced the selection of BeIA as the platform for future TEAC audio production products. TASCAM is a huge name in audio, and I have used their products on several occasions, with great results. This is a huge announcement for BeIA expanding beyond the typical niche that it is percieved in. This should have some amazing results. Read on for the press release..

Site posts Daily Builds of BeZilla

BeZilla

Well, BeZilla has made great progress recently, and just keeps going. Up until now it has been very hard to follow their work because the build process was difficult, and consumed lots of time and resources. Solving that problem is Wade Majors, who is posting daily builds of BeZilla on his site. So if you get bored and feel like seeing what point it is at, now its much easier. Mozilla is a huge project, and the progress being made is very encouraging. I urge you to support the BeZilla dev’s any way you can, because a modern browser is a pretty big need right now. Way to go BeZilla team and Wade!

Moho updated on BeOS

Art / Image

In a very interesting move, Lost Marble has posted what is labeled Moho 2.2 to BeBits. Version 2.2 is the current version of their animation software Moho for all platforms. We recently ran an email from Moho showing questionable support of the BeOS version. While the changes from 2.0 to 2.2 are mainly windows specific and won’t help BeOS users much, this rapid update to the BeOS edition could be shown as a very positive message from Lost Marble.

Lord of the Rings Trailer Friday

Film / Movie

BeGroovy’s Ruprect wrote in to point out that the trailer for “Lord of the Rings” will premier attached to the Kevin Costner film, “Thirteen Days”, tommorrow. (at least in the US, that is). I just finished reading LOTR and firmly believe that this film series (if done correctly) will unseat star wars as the best fantasy/scifi trilogy ever. It is by far the best epic story i have ever read. Oh yeah, Thirteen Days is supposed to be a great film as well, so you may actually want to stay when the trailer ends.

Gobe Software

Apparently Gobe is now hiring. They want people experienced in cross-platform development, which gives weight to the cross-platform rumors surrounding them. That said, the first platform they list is BeOS, so that is helpful. Anyway, it’s a good sign for Gobe that they are in a situation suitable to hire more engineers. Way to go guys!

Interview

Since BeGroovy began, one of our top goals has been an interview with the man himself, Jean-Louis Gassée. Thanks to the efforts of Scar, such an interview was arranged and conducted december 12th 2000, when Myself, Scar, and JLG sat down for a few hours to chat about the year 2000 for Be, Inc, as well as what the future may hold. Its gone through the system, and here it (finally) is. Have a blast. :)
