Just noticed that Jabber for BeOS has been released on bebits by Rapture in Venice. This is a great app which i have been testing for quite a while… It is currently useful mainly for chatting among jabber users, as the transports are iffy on the server side… but they should be working soon. This is the most stable IM client i have used on BeOS for any system, and I reccommend you all try it. :)

Santa isn’t the only one who can fly across the sky and balance precariously on rooftops… so can the warriors in what is being called the greatest martial arts movie ever made, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Ruprect is back with his view of this semi-limited release instant classic, which i am about to drive 2 hours to see.

3ivX not released on BeOS yet

Codec

Well.. in a stunning move of not-so-coolness, 3ivx launched today, but only with a windows version and a note that the BeOS version will “Take a little longer”. It is listed on their page, and their commitment seems to be intact, but it looks like another waiting game has begun. Oh well. Time to offer our support and let them know how much we want it… Maybe we can get it pushed up on their schedule. On the upside, this will allow lots of content to be created before our codec is released.

What would happen to Linux if BeOS were GPL’ed

Software

Slashdot has an interesting story asking Slashdot readers what would happen to Linux if BeOS we’re GPL’ed. While BeOS will almost certainly never be opensourced due to licensed code and the fact that it shares a lot of code with BeIA, it is an interesting discussion. Be warned though.. the article is about the effect on linux, and not on the software world as a whole. And Slashdot readers tend to be pretty closed minded about anything being better than Linux. (not that BeOS users are consistently rational) My advice is to take the high road. Read along and correct false information, while avoiding getting trapped in a religious war.

Nvidia purchases 3dfx

Hardware

3dfx has just announced that it will be purchased by Nvidia. 3dfx make the voodoo range of graphics cards, and traditionally have been the best supported cards under BeOS. Nvidia makes the leading windows 3d graphics card, the GeForce2. Nvidia has traditionally declined to provide Be with the information needed to create BeOS drivers. It is not yet known what will happen to the 3dfx product line, or if they will continue to be open with the needed specs for BeOS drivers. Time to support ATI Radeons and Matrox G400s?

Just launched bwfund.begroovy.com to help track the status of the Black & White port fund, which is working to get Black & White on BeOS. While the page is very basic now, it will be updated with new information and features as the information is found or features are requested. In a related note (it’s site news anyway) - it seems to have snowed around here…. ;)

Opera acquires Hern Labs

Hern Labs, known for porting the Opera webbrowser to BeOS, has been acquired by Opera Software. This is a very interesting turn of events, as it actually removes one of the parties involved in Opera on BeOS. Now it’s just Opera, and Be. Could this lead to faster development of 4.0 (or 5.0) on BeOS? I have no idea. What do you think?

New BMessage posted. It rules. No, really.

Be Inc

Ladies and gentlemen, I think Be is starting to see the need to support their community a bit more directly. In the the new BMessage on their site, there are several very nice articles. JLG talks about wireless, such as bluetooth. Lee Williams directly tackles the issue of co-development, in a great article, basically explaining Be’s seeming silence. Very reassuring. Finally, Jon Watte has written an article about a whole new portion of the media kit api called game_audio, which is apparently pretty nice. While they have done the BMessage for a while, this one is especially nice. This thing made my day. :)

Ok. So the announcement of Black & White’s port being in question seemed to upset quite a few people. It upset me as well. People started talking of ways to save it, and I offered to help. Soon a completely insane, and very unlikely plan was formed. Read on..UPDATE: Had to upgrade account types to handle the flood (no joke) at paypal, so now they take a small fee of 30cents + 2.2% from incoming payments. This can not be refunded, because i can’t afford to cover the cost. People who have contributed before this change have been marked, and will not have to worry about this.

Recently BeGroovy reporters Scar and Technix did what can only be described as “bombarding” Kenny Carruthers with questions. After the resulting rubble was sorted through, we ended up with a rather large 6 page interview on everything from Postmaster 2.0, to Be Inc, to BeIA, to his stint at Apple. Party on.

InsideBeOS Shipping, European sales hurting

Inside BeOS Magazine

Just a quick note to let you all know what the status is on the shipment of the Inside BeOS magazine discussed a few weeks ago. Bernd Korz of Inside BeOS wrote us to let us know that the magazine finished it’s print run this week, and they are shipping now. They will attempt airmail to speed delivery. He also mentioned that they have only sold a portion of what they needed to sell to break even with the BeUsers in Europe. So if there are 25-30 more of you in Europe who feel like helping Inside BeOS stay afloat and out of debt, why not order a copy now?
