Since it seems the only news lately from us is about BeDoper, and since we hold the old content of the original BeDope (Icon Tarot, Haiku Generator, and Quotable JLG), I hereby decree that BeGroovy is now the front end to BeDoper.
In all seriousness (or without all seriousness, depending upon how you look at it), a new article there concerns the birthday greeting (if you can call it that) that Eugenia posted on OS News (note the lack of a link - I’m boycotting OS News’ bias editorial opinion). At least BeDoper can still make me smile after reading Eugenia’s article. Yes, I’m torqued a bit. Thanks BeDope.
So it seems Mike Popovic isn’t quite as missing as we thought. He used to run BeDope, but that ended quite a while back when it bought AOL Time Warner, forming BeDope AOL Time Warner, or when Mike got bored. Whichever is more likely.
In any case, it seems that he is still doing BeDope like things, but on a slightly smaller scale. Things such as HipShake, a site developed for the HipTop, which in turn was developed by Danger, where it’s email component was developed by Kenny Carruthers, who previously developed Postmaster (get it free as binary here; opensourcing it never happened) for BeOS. Whew!
Anyway, HipShake looks like fun. It hasn’t been updated in over a month, but hey… for a while there, neither had we. Maybe this will motivate Mike to pick it up again. Oh, and he has a note on the BeDope frontpage about a new project. (Hint: Look at the top of the right column). Finally, if you miss the original BeDope, why not check out BeDoper or Twisted Thread, both pretty darned good attempts at keeping the spirit alive.
Earlier we posted that BeForever had posted. Then I, no, not I, _binky_ posted a BeDope-esqe item. It was brought to my attention (mad props to Travis) BeDoper, the mindchild of the former BeDope, has also recently been updated - an interview with JLG.
And guess what? JLG is into construction (and destruction) these days!
Mike Popovic of BeDope fame has struck again over at Segfault.org with his story BeOS Signs DNR, Requests “Death with Dignity”. The article discusses BeOS’s final wishes as she lay in her hospital bed, and raises the question of if she will be remembered as a great technology ahead of it’s time or as the butt of jokes, like amiga and os/2. What do you think? Should beos simply go to sleep quietly, or should we drag it kicking and screaming back to life? I plan on giving my best effort to keep it alive, but if I can’t make anything happen by a year from now, I am letting it die peacefully. How ’bout you?
Pirx wrote in with this:
The domain BeDope (www.bedope.com) is up for sale. The website has been dormant for a while. The ‘About’ page says that “Be Dope will remain operational in its website form until Project BE comes to its logical and inevitable conclusion”.
Pirx wonders if we should collect some small cash and point the domain here, since many of BeDope’s features are now on BeGroovy. What do you think?
UPDATE:Brett Jungblut wrote in to tell us that the yaBel domain is also up for sale. Dropping like flies, aren’t they?
When Mike announced he was going to stop updating BeDope, he mentioned that he would probably find new homes for several of the other features BeDope had, such as The Quotable JLG, The Be Haiku Generator, and The Icon Tarot. Well, those features have now found the perfect home at BeGroovy. We would like to take a moment and thank Mike for all his hard work on BeDope, and to encourage all of you to help us keep the Quotable JLG and Be Haiku generator fresh, by sending us new submissions. Read on for more details..
BeDope, that bastion of BeOS related humor, seems to be closing down after three years of good times. They are going out with a bang, after having acquired AOL Time Warner and creating “the new AOL Time Warner Be Dope organization” While that is probably questionable, it states it’s their final issue. And I’m gonna miss them. Thanks for the laughs guys. UPDATE: Mike has issued a letter to clarify any confusion over the BeDope closing. Read More to see it.
