Websites Down But Not Out

Just a quick note to let everyone know that some sites that are currently down are not out. Maverick has stated that he’s having server problems for BeOS Central, and is working on it. And a couple of my domains, now maintained by others, are not gone as they seem. i-BUG.org has expired, as my contact info was old, and I didn’t get the notices. The payment has been submitted. And the Neo-Programmer’s Collective (neo-programmers.com) is moving servers, and we are having a few - um - hiccups. They’ll be back.

Last Chance, for more than just the Last Chance

Just a quick note: There’s only just over a day to get in on the Second Last Chance deal here, but there’s less than that if you want to get an authentic BeBox (see pic link in news below). Do a search for “bebox” on eBay, from the computers section, and you’ll find 2 BeBoxes listed there, one ending in less than a day, and still for less than $500 USD (well, one is $500). So, if you’ve wanted a BeBox, now’s a good time… I only wish I had a job, or one of those would be mine. :)

2nd Last Chance Last Chance

Okay, so eBay evidently spotted “CDR” in the auction and thought I was distributing pirated CDR’s of the Last Chance package, and not the original Last Chance CD distributed by WCD, which happens to be a CDR. They cancelled the auction.

Here’s the new auction for your bidding pleasure. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Matthias has been out looking for eVilla news, and he found a bit… here’s the links:

This one will lead you to this one, where you will find documentation, FAQ, etc.

This one from Pioneer Planet, which is pretty positive.

Here’s one from the Star Tribune, which is short - and negative.

And this one from PC World, which points out how the eVilla is supposed to be a replacement for a second PC, but that people with one PC would already have an existing ISP.

Oh, and one last thing… there’s only a couple of days left to donate a tip to David Reid. Curious why you should? Click here if the word “Apache” isn’t enough. :) July 1st, BeForever will name a new beneficiary, and my PayPal account will follow. To donate, just PayPal your tip to deej@beunited.org. And don’t be ashamed to only tip a buck or two, every cent helps out. :)

3dfx and Maybe nVidia not to be supported in WinXP

Why is this here? Just to show that nVidia is the root of all evil, next to MS themselves. Matthias noted that, as posted on EntCity, 3dfx cards will not be supported in WindowsXP. It was clearly stated by someone from MS that nVidia will not give them the source for the 3dfx drivers. More recently, there is a rumour that MS kicked nVidia out of talks concerning XP DirectX9 because they wouldn’t sign an agreement with MS.

Yet Another BeOS Site Bites the Dust

Well, yet another BeOS website has bitten it… this time it was Yet Another BeOS Link (yaBel). Brett finally closed the doors on the site, after a long period of inactivity. Brett had this to say:

I’d like to thank each and every user that ever visited yaBel. You made it an experience worthy of my time, and I’ve enjoyed it very much. Go ahead now, and visit yet another BeOS link.

Regards,
Brett

yaBel was a good site at the time, and held many a mailing list archives, as well as a headlines page showing headlines from around the BeOS communtiy. It was a sad thing when it stopped being updated, and it’s even sadder now that it’s officially of the BeOS links lists (are there still BeOS links lists? :P ). Anyhoos - thanks for riding the wave with us a while Brett… hope to see you on the other side, whichever side that may be. :)

Cappuccino runs BeOS

Not sure how old this article is, but it is a slow BeOS news week, and Mattias Toth evidently just found it on Ars Technica. Looks like a very interesting “bookshelf” PC, that, later in the article (page 3), reviewer Hannibal tested with BeOS and QNX, and reports that both were “snappy”. I, for one, love these little boxes (such as the NIC one, which I’m hoping Axel finishes the ethernet drivers for) - And this baby clocks in up to 1Ghz! Now, where can I get one of these to test stuff with? At iBuyPower, which I maxed out the system and it ran around $1700USD, for a reasonable system (minimum on everything) it ran at $1000. Anyways, thought some of you tinkerers out there would want to know. :)

Since BeForever seems to be down, I’d like to thank everyone for donating to Daniel Switkin’s TipJar, the amount was quite a bit more than expected. I’m closing that TipJar now and sending Daniel a composite check of all the tips. And, as previously posted on BeForever, you can now send in tips for David Reid, the person responsible for bringing Apache and many other ports to BeOS. To send in a tip, get a PayPal account, and send a couple bucks to “deej@beunited.org”. Let’s dig into those pockets and put in a couple of dollars here and there. At the beginning of next month, BeForever will announce a new TipJar recipient, so you only have 2 weeks to donate to David.

Georges Gabereau wrote in to let everyone know about the launch of a BUG in Toronto, Canada.

The Toronto Be User Group has tentatively planned a meeting for Friday the 15th of June, 2001. We know it’s a little short notice, but we hope people can manage it. As of now we only have 3 members, but we are hoping that posting this will attract a few more.

For those interested in visiting please visit http://tbug.cjb.net for information on joining the eGroup and for info on the details of the meeting. Hope to see many people show up! If you have any specific questions email me at georges@acbm.net and I’ll get back to you ASAP.

If you live in the Toronto area, go out and pay a visit!

i-BUG reminds travellers to check for BUGs

Dlazlo of i-BUG wrote in to remind the summer travellers to look up any BUGs in the areas they’ll be travelling to. He states:

With the summer travel season upon us here in the northern hemisphere, I’d like to encourage all traveling BeOS users to check for active BUGs and/or users in the area you will be traveling to. Find out if there’s any BUG meetings or events going on while you’re in the area. If nothing else, you could contact any known users where you’ll be visiting and have a visit. This not only ties the community closer together, it’s a wonderful way to help spread ideas, or maybe germinate a few.

Sounds like a good idea to me. If you are ever in the Denver area, look me up!

PayPal Your TipJar Tips

Wanted to “tip” a developer via the TipJar, featured on BeForever, but found it a bit complicated? Go ahead and PayPal your tip to me at deej@beunited.org. I’ll be sending Daniel a check of all donations plus mine on the 16th of June. Since I started this a bit later than expected, I’ll make it last until the 15th to contribute to Daniel - after that, I’ll be forwarding the check to the next developer on the 5th of the following month.

IMPORTANT: Make sure you indicate that this is a TipJar in the subject of the PayPal transaction, as this account will also be used for the BeUnited driver fund. Use “TipJar - [developer name]” in the subject to avoid any misunderstandings or delays.

BeOutback launches Australian BeOS Site

Just got an email about BeOutback, an australian Be user site, whose aim is to help beos users in australia locate each other, and help them start to promote beos. To do this, they are creating a database of australian BeOS users, so that newbies can find people with experience to talk to, etc. They ask that any australian users submit their info, and/or write articles to help out. And if you aren’t australian, i don’t think they would turn away any articles you may want to submit either. ;)

Ars Technica has a blurb on Be

Ars Technica is running a front page story called “The last argument of kings?” about Be and Sony’s upcoming eVilla. They remark about how unremarkable it is on first glance, but how some of the features make it more expandable, and BeIA itself is the thing that makes it special. Not much in there that Be users don’t already know, but at least we know the hardcore tech geeks are still paying attention. :)

Neverwinter Nights FAQ Updated - and talks of BeOS

Scar noticed that in an evident update to the Neverwinter Nights FAQ, now at version 3.0, there’s a good tidbit for BeOS users. Directly from the FAQ:

We are planning a simultaneous PC / Macintosh / Linux release for Neverwinter, with all three versions to be included in a single box. BeOS users will be happy to know that we are also developing a BeOS version in parallel to our other platforms. It’s been going very smoothly so far and, if all goes well, we hope to include it as part of our standard release.

Heres the link again - click on “The Technical Stuff” (Section VIII).

UPDATE: A small warning - The FAQ requires some Javascript, and thus is not very Net+ friendly. :(

BeForever’s TipJar - Daniel Switkin

Submitted News

BeForever’s TipJar this past month was for Daniel Switkin, author of a few BeOS freeware apps, including the absolutely necessary, GIFTranslator. Now, I don’t think there’s anyone out there that can honestly say that this isn’t one of the first things that they install on a fresh install of BeOS, as it’s needed for the web, and it’s not in BeOS itself.

Show a lil’ support and toss Daniel a tip. Even if you only have a couple of dollars to tip, it sure helps when it adds up. And if you don’t even ante up a single dollar, I expect the guilt of this to take over your soul, and you’ll un-install GIFTranslator for a week or two, so that you can remember not to take it for granted anymore. :P

BeOS to become AOL OS?

Ladies and Gentlemen… may I present for your consideration, yet another AOL Buying and Using BeOS story. This one is by Kelly McNeill of osOpinion, and pretty much restates the speculation out there. It has actually made it’s way to yahoo as well. While I am not sure I agree exactly with his philosophy (I see it more likely that Sony buys Be and licenses it to AOL…), it does make interesting topic for discussion. Hell, maybe some crazy people will read it on yahoo, and my stock will go up. It can’t go anywhere else. :P

Dane Scott over at le Buzz is looking for someone to take over the day to day news and care of le Buzz. He isn’t going anywhere, but is just too over-extended, and needs to focus on TuneTracker and BeOSRadio. I can vouch for the fact that le Buzz has a pretty decent news posting system (I wrote it) and wouldn’t be too hard to maintain… especially if you were already into audio and beos. If you are interested, get in touch with Dane.
