Open Standards Portal Launches!

Right. So BeUnited, that group of dashing gentlemen tirelessly working to save your favorite os, have launched their Open Standards Portal, a site dedicated to posting standards proposals and refining them through a community process.

On of the things that is great about the openbeos effort is how organized the community is keeping it. it is very much a unified effort, and this is a huge step in getting every last user involved in crafting the best possible os for everyone. I highly suggest you all go over and join in the discussion of the future. YOU can actually influence what happens to the os. So dont waste your chance.

Congratulations to the BeUnited team for taking such a huge step towards a unified set of standards for the osbos system(s). Keep up the great work!

BeUnited now official OpenOffice porting team

BeUnited announced today that they are officially recognized by Sun Microsystems, Inc. as copyright approved for the BeOS port of OpenOffice. Or something like that. Here is their announcement:

We are very pleased to announce that beunited.org has been approved by Sun Microsystems, Inc. as a copyright-approved organization for the porting of OpenOffice to BeOS. The project is in its early stages and beunited.org is asking the BeOS developer community for help by participating in the project. Any BeOS developers wanting to help with the project are asked to join at OpenOffice.org through the BeOS project.

So thats good news then. ;)

If you want to, you can see BeOS listed on OpenOffice.org’s Porting Page and can go sign up to help with the port. Go BeUnited. Good luck with it!

BeUnited & YellowTab team up

BeUnited and YellowTab have teamed up to promote standards in OpenBeOS distributions. As BeUnited and YellowTab are the only two announced OBOS distros I know of, this means there will be a pretty strong level of standardization.

This can only be good for BeOS, which has always relied on standards such as people files, mail files, mp3 attributes, etc. Hopefully this partnership will continue that, as well as more obtuse standards that shape the operating environment.

If anyone knows what that last sentance means, please tell me. In the mean time, congratulations to BeUnited and YellowTab on teaming up to make OpenBeOS distros a better experience for everyone. Yay!

BTW: You can read all about it at either of their homepages, accessible from the links above.

Well, I don’t post here much. No real excuse these days. I would just like to remind you to check out the other cool BeOS news sites that are staying updated these days - TotallyBe, The BeOS Journal, BeFAQs, BeForever, Loved, and the many many others out there that are keeping the fresh news flowing. :)

Now, the news - OpenBeOS‘ OBFS team now has the file system feature complete!!! Congrats and Kudos to BGA and Axel!

beunited.org - if you haven’t been there recently, go. ;)

BeUnited having DNS problems

Well, I transferred the DNS to the new server for BeUnited, and it didn’t go as planned, obviously. I have put in the DNS change back to the old server - until I try again. :) Do not worry, things will get sorted out and BeUnited will return online soon.

As my primary email address is on BeUnited, anyone that needs to get ahold of me can do it in the forums or at deej at beunited dot COM (not org).

BeUnited recently announced full support of OBOS. While this has been known for some time, this is the “official” announcement of support. Mentioned also is the possibility of BlueOS.

And speaking of OBOS, the newest newsletter issue is out, and there was some recent news on the progress of the Network team from David Reid. Also, DarkWyrm has posted some news on the AppServer progress. Things are sure looking up! Check it all out.

OpenBeOS First Release

Posted by:Ryan on Friday, 15 Feb, 2002 @ 10:59 AM

Just browsing the OpenBeOS web site and noticed that they posted the first release of OpenBeOS. It is currently just a patch on top of an existing 5.03 installation, which includes the latest opentracker/opendeskbar, mail daemon replacement, and a bunch of replacement prefs panels. This may not seem like much, but in the background teams are also making steady progress on things such as an open BFS driver, adapting the NewOS kernel for OpenBeOS, and a bunch of the kits such as the interface kit. I think their tactic of replacing things a bit at a time until the whole thing is open is a great one, and I hope to have enough time to get involved and help out in the future. Keep up the great work guys!

BeUnited sees possible progress with Palm

Okay, I don’t normally post here on BeUnited things, since I’m usually the one posting BeUnited news - but since this one I didn’t post, and it is a VERY important one for everyone to read…

Go There Now and read about it. EVERYONE needs to send that email out, and hold out on a little hope that Palm might play with us some. :)

BeUnited Accepting Project Ideas

Posted by:Deej on Wednesday, 13 Jun, 2001 @ 11:18 PM

BeUnited is now accepting potential projects for the driver fund. You can go to the newly created “Potential Projects” Forum to post hardware you’d like to see voted on, and comment to show support on which others you’d like to see. This will be used for determining which manufacturers to be contacted for specs, and which devices will be in the polls for voting on for popular demand. Go tell BeUnited what hardware you’d like to see investigated for possible support.

Well, it’s probably not quite right pluggin’ another site I work on here, but I need more eyeballs… :P

BeUnited has begun a Driver Fund initiative. Things seem to be connecting and coming together smoothly at this point. Head over to read what it’s all about, should this interest you.

Also, anyone with BeOS driver development experience that might be interested, contact me! BeUnited, and another unannounced site (no not another one of mine), are also in need of PHP and Perl coders to help out with website scripting, so if you’re interested in that… ;)

BeUnited just posted a large update on their news page. They discuss various apps being developed, as well as the future of BeUnited. Worth a read. :)
